My new favorite team is Ghana.

It was like watching the bunch from the neighborhood across the river come over to play your guys and finding out just how tough both teams could be.

(The Americans played as if they were wearing their good school clothes.)

Well done Aus. brilliant. But if I thought Merk was a Jerk then perhaps one can rhyme Poll with ***hole

from todays sports section of the Guardian

Quote:
Englands footballers may not have yet made their mark on this years World Cup but last night Graham Poll the countrys sole referee in Germany, certainly did with a performance that may go down as one of the most error-strewn in the tournament's history

How could he miss Viduka being hauled to the ground?

Still right result. I thought the Croats were basically cheats.

Hinge loved the footballing quotes.

Aussies embrace beautiful game

Internet search engines are flooded with questions about how 'soccer' is played, and the nation is hungry to understand how a nil nil draw can be a brilliant nail biting tactical thriller. Australians are cottoning on to football, finds Ben Sandilands

Thursday June 22, 2006

Soccer has invaded Australia, sweeping an entire continent on to its feet. But before the Socceroos, as Australia's national soccer side is known, played their first match in Germany this month and made their first World Cup Appearance since 1974, almost no one old enough to vote, drink or drive even knew the rules of the game.

A week or two into the tournament Australia remains 'soccer illiterate' (and innumerate), but is suddenly on a steep and enthusiastic learning curve that seems detached from the fortunes of its team. It is being part of the World Cup that has set the public interest alight. Half-way through the tournament, the internet search engines are coping with queries as to how 'soccer' is played.

this is surely bullsh1t

Wilso - unfortunately, I think your lot are going to have a tough time qualifying from the group, but it's good to see the Aussies there whatever happens.

It also looks like the US have got some tough games as well, but draws with Italy and the Czechs might be enough to see them to the next stage.

England's group is looking pretty sweet, even with the bloody Swedes again (who England haven't beaten in 37 years).

Who do I cheer for now? Is Mexico still in?

Mexico play Argentina on Saturday, amigo.

I shall be cheering on the Mexicans, whilst scoffing a chilli con carne as a way of showing my support.

Nice cheering pal, but chilli con carne is Texan food, not Mexican.

Even Texans don't understand the difference. Every time I'm down there and want to get Mexican food, all the Texans tell me where to get the best fajitas. Go figure.

That said, I am not a fan of Mexican soccer.

Some great games last night, the Brazilians looked like they might just be starting to slip into gear, so much more vibrancy in the play. I'm pleased Australia are through especially as it was Harry Kewell who got the decider but disappointed to see the Czechs crash out although it's great, for the game, to see Ghana through. I usually offer a little support to the Italians in the past but I've lost touch with the game in that country over the past few years, I long for the days of Roberto Baggio being part of the Azzurri rather than the likes of Totti and De Rossi but what are you gonna do. Gattusso and Zambrotta are two great players and pros though, still some of my favourite players around. Australia - Italy should be a good game, things heating up now.

I was really pleased to see Ronaldo hit the back of the net twice the way he did last night as well personally, someone told me that there were rumours he's been suffering from bouts of dizziness, something has certainly been off with him. When you think of the records he had at the likes of PSV, Barca and Inter, it is sad to see a true great treading water like he did in those 2 earlier games. He wasn't on top form last night and will probably never be again, certainly not even close to it in this tournament but I enjoyed those goals last night. He was very close to a goal per game for both PSV and Barcelona and smashed a goal every other game at Inter & Real Madrid, scary really.

How could he miss the fact that he gave Simunic three yellow cards? And I think he deserved a red right from the getgo when he pulled Viduka down in the box. And the second yellow card should have been a red too, when he hauled down two players in a row in the middle of the field -- not even trying to be clever about it, just blatant tackling like in American football. There were a lot of errors. But yeah, right result in the end. The aussies are going.

That Croatian coach sure's a funny one, in his nice suit ... how he jumped in the arms of his player or assistant at both goals, with his feet up, legs wrapped around him..

Here they kept panning to him every time he got up and started gesturing all over the place. It was hilarious the faces he was making with his arms flapping all over the place.

laughing about this artical from june 1 this year.

Poll

And Poll told BBC Radio Five: "If you make a big mistake in your first game it will be your last game and that is something that's been made clear to us.

"There is a very high standard of performance expected of us."

Ha!

Mornin' Osso. I hope I wasn't too hard on your Italians yesterday.

I didnt think you were being too hard LE.

Italy midfielder Daniele de Rossi has been handed a four-match World Cup ban and fined 4,5000 for elbowing United States striker Brian McBride.

Wow! That's harsh.

My favorite thing of that match was when they panned to US fans in the stands and they were making diving motions (like in a pool) and yelling "dive, dive, dive, dive" at the Italians. It was very funny.

Incidentally, I'm unable to decide if the officiating in that game was as bad as the US vs. Italy game.

Officiating in what game other than U.S. vs. Italy?

That is a harsh penalty - four games could be a lifetime in World Cup, but McBride looked like he just walked out of an ultimate fighting match.

that really is a HUGE amount...of what I'm not sure.

The Italians get up to little tricks like that all the time so it seems. Its difficult not to stereotype sometimes.

I think the only way to curb it would be for clubs to withdraw insurance cover for players who continually indulge in foul or dangerous play.
