Against THIS English team, even Germany with their bad defence would have looked quite good, I think.

No, it was marked from the very first moment as an own goal on the official boards.

Are you burying us already, Walter?

VERY early days.

3pm kickoff in scorching heat, coupled with, IMO, poor tactical decision by the dreaded Swede.

Sven..."I know, ve'll tek Owen urf, leaf Croach all on hiz own and let ze Paraguayans atteck uz orll efternoon....zair, vot do you sink?"

Brilliant Sven, brilliant.

Well we won! 3 points from your 1st game is a must to get off to the best possible start. It has WC 2002 & Euro 2004 written all over it with the 2nd half display though, I'm not sure what the reason was (it was 30C apparently!) but hopefully that's the last time we'll play at this hour during competition. Even so I just get the feeling that, in fact, we haven't learnt from past experiences and the whole team still has this, 'score and defend' mentality which is totally against most english players I see. We don't seem to like passing the ball around unless we have a purpose in which case we keep it very well...and yet...this is exactly what we messed about for 45 minutes trying to do.

Onwards and upwards...

No, not at all. But your team didn't play like THE favourite.
(I know, I know, you still won't have to delete that date at Buckimham Palace for the audience of the World Champion 2006!)

Absolutely! If it were me, and Owen was slowen (because of heat, or fitness), I would have put a young, fast pair of legs on to replace him, and scare the shite out of the Paraguayan defence.
It would have re-inspired the midfield to thread balls through, knowing that a young greyhound was up there, desperately trying to prove his worth.
A second goal would have buried the game, and removed 90% of the tension, and a new "youngblood" would have lost his virginity.

Yes....I would have brought on Walcott.

Win convincingly in an entertaining way, or be damned.

Lord E.
If you are looking for a new manservant, I believe a fellow by the name of Gamarra is looking for immediate , confidential, employment.

Any word from Penbury ?

First reactions are mixed:

Erikson satisfied with opener

Eriksson, Beckham happy with England win in heat

England can improve, says happy Eriksson

England fail to convince

Back to the tv now ...

Sweden vs. Trinidad -- this is an exciting game. Fast and hard, just the way I like it. I fell asleep during England vs. Paraguay.

Sweden looks strong. It's only a matter of time before they put one in. Of course, being the underdog lover, I'm pulling for Trinidad.

INGERLAND, INGERLAND, INGERLAND

I've burn't me chest in the sun (oh well, red and white's ok at the moment)

...and I've popped my inflatable hand.

First time I've seen that really tall man play - very nimble for a six fot plus.

Do you think the Beeb would employ me as a pundit?

A fair score would have been England 0, Paraguay minus 1.

And where is Craven, by God's sake?
Does he still say Gamarra is the best world all time defender?
