Oddly enough, I have some intelligence, and am actually able to work out for myself that it is different for a group of african americans to use nigger than it is for a white person...

Well, that's encouraging. We all have to start where we are, don't we?
Just so I'm clear - you think those whites who still struggle with this are not intelligent?

Lol!!!

Why not respond to my comments about you, Snood, since you so neatly avoided them, and my calling you on your attempt to to twist what I said, and continue to offer meaningless insults, or explain what YOU meant, if you were not intending to be so rude.

Why do YOU think everyone should know all abour America?

Is it dumb to be so Americacentric?

Is it dumb to try to start another bunfight about intelligence because someone calls you on your posts?

And I think whites who live in countries where there has been oppression of people on the basis of race and who cannot "get" the distinction being discussed have either not been exposed to having it explained properly, or don't want to get it, as in the anti PC crowd.

I really am trying to figure out exactly what the hell it is you're blathering about, dlowan. No, I don't think everyone should know everything about American Blacks, and I don't think that I have suggested I do think that.
I actually think we are agreeing on most things. There is a disconnect (as you said, either intentional or otherwise) in the mind of some whites still extant about the use of the word. You are writing very fast, perhaps faster than you are thinking. I'm sure you have been at least as insulting to me as I have to you here. I have no need to twist anything. If I'm "twisting" anything, it's my brain twisting trying to figure out just what the hell has got you so worked up.

I agree we agree on most things.

What got me so worked up was:

Oh my.

I am sorry I asked.

Look, the progenitor of this thread is either a nutty troll, or a sad bastid, and is offensive and all that.

I asked re negro only because I was ...absolutely separately from the obvious awfulness of the troll/sad bastid...curious about when the word transmogrified.

...and I repeat - if you really wanted to settle it in your mind, all you needed to do was try to address the very next group of blacks as such.

Why did you think I was asking if I did not "really" want to find out?

To me that was a "You oughta know idiot" response, at the kindest interpretation. The nuance appeared to me to be that I had no right asking, was racist not to know, etc.

Perhaps you can try explaining what you meant if I am wrong, rather than doing flatly idiotic stuff like saying I am challenging your greater knowledge of being black in America. Sheesh. We may disagree on stuff Snood, but I actually think you ought to know that I am not a steaming idiot by now.

If I have misinterpreted your comment, then I apologize, but I wonder how in hell you thought anyone was going to interpret that comment?

Here's the thing, Dlowan - and you may doubt my sincerity, but I promise it is true...
Until the last 24 hours, it had never registered in my mind that you are not from "here". I guess we've never been involved in a discussion where it was an issue - where we were pecking at our keyboards from. so, that was something I had to try to absorb during this discussion - with all its inherent land mines. As it happens, I have never had a reason to consider the difference between the racial problem here and in Australia, and I have never thought of you as from somewhere else.

I'm sure that if I were to search through past threads you've probably mentioned it plenty. I guess until now I've never had a reason to notice.

And, in the interest of openness let me say...
I admit to taking a battle stance probably too hastily. I think the ignorance (especially the willing kind of ignorance)) that we've already addressed just really bothers me.

Actually, Snood, you have in the past told me I had no right commenting on political issues here because I am not American, so I have always assumed you DO know that.

This was in a thread where I objected to the manner (physical appearance, sexual desirability etc) in which Ann Coulter was being denigrated, as opposed to criticising her work.

I have no reason to doubt your honesty in saying this was no longer recalled by you, though.

"And, in the interest of openness let me say...

Fair enough, I understand.

There's no great mystery about Negro. If you say it to a friend, they laugh. If you say it to someone who wants an excuse to cuss you out or take out their frustrations, they will. Some people walk around mad with a chip on their shoulder. Others are friendly.

There's no excuse for acting stupid about a word--especially Negro. Damn, it's not even slang. I think the same people who get worked up over that word are the same ones who use a football game win or a hurricane as an excuse for looting. There are plenty of people who would never think of looting.

It's about the person, not the word.

Well, I for one, have no desire to knowingly use language which I know to be considered insulting and demeaning in social dealings with people with a different history from mine for no reason.

It's about the person, not just the word.

But since language defines our reality, it is about the word in its context, too.

In this kind of context, open debate and open slather within TOS about such things, but why be rude for the sake of it?

It shouldn't be used in a context that involves an insult.

Nor, should it be barred from use.

So says me.

Is anyone saying it should be barred from use? (What would we do about the United Negro College Fund in that case?)

I think it's all been about context and explaining possible pejorative meanings -- which is in keeping with your first sentence.

(There, are we all in agreement? :-D)

Kasaova seemed to really open up a can of worms before his sudden departure.

Up here in Canada, we just sorta stick to black and white. ;-)

So, Kasanova got banned for using the word "negro" and likening people of color to monkeys, all in light of the fact that he's a person of color also, but then other, well established members here are still around after continually spewing words like "ragheads," and phrases like "Palestinian vermin." OK.

Mmmmmmmmm.....

Although, personally, I do not believe Kasaovo likely to be any colour other than whatever colour trolls are.

I don't know how many times that I have observed that we should all just call each other by our names.

They aren't tight asses.

I am still trying to figure out why a friend would laugh. I am still trying to figure out why people who get worked up over the word are the same ones to loot. I am still trying to figure out why this thread is still alive.

You mean the spewers of the term "ragheads," and the phrase "Palestinan vermin?"

Lash and Finn d'Abuzz, respectively.
