The point of life is life itself. That might be tautological but its not pointless. Living stuff exploits energy to create order out of chaos. If there is a conscious goal in mind, its from our minds alone.

@Steve 41oo,
It's not totally pointless if you work towards goals, and accomplish some of them.

@cicerone imposter,
Goals are pointless too for an atheist.

I'm surprised at you all. Not only do you get the colly-wobblies at eugenics but you do also with the pointlessness of everything to an atheist. Jesus said that this world, from beginning to end, the billions of years of it measured by our clocks, is but a flash of lightning. And that was the shortest thing he could presumably think of that his listeners might understand. And that was truly revolutionary. When he turned the money tables over he was forseeing financial meltdown.

I don't need to prove life is pointless to an atheist. It is self evident. To an agnostic it only may be pointless. To a religious person life has a point. Reassure yourselves all you want with cheap sophistries--it makes not a shite of difference. That's pointless as well.

Hide from the Marquis de Sade. Comfort yourselves. Be my guest.

@spendius,
I would claim that the majority of atheists lives much better than somebody like you who spends most days in a pub. Pointless doesn't even come close to your pointless and wasted life of a microbe who lives on alcohol as your goal in life.

What, pray tell, have you accomplished other than your daily trek to the local pub?

@spendius,
Not certainly you! LOL
I do my share of drinking - beer, wine and vodka martinis, but I do not go to the pub or drink at home every day. Most often, I drink on cruises, but will have a beer with lunch or wine with dinner in a restaurant when at home or on land tours.

Don't tell me that you've been pulling the Sunday Church service prostitute trick all these years.

I don't go every day either. I miss Good Fridays.

What an idiot you are ci. All the snide comments you have applied to me sound like they go double for you.

I wouldn't dream of drinking during the day or even the early evening. By my standards you could well be a piss artist. I consider the two pints I've had tonight an essential part of my diet.

Really? Why not? That's the best time to drink, (in my experience and opinion). A nice cold beer or glass of wine at the end of the work day - preferably sitting outside if it's hot and sunny- just relaxing and watching the sun go down- I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I don't even think there's anything wrong with having a glass of wine or a beer or two with your lunch (as long as you're not driving or operating heavy equipment when you get back to work).

And as far as the topic goes, I don't think atheists' lives necessarily have to be pointless.

@aidan,
I never said there was anything wrong with it Becksie.

Atheist's live don't have to be pointless. Christians give them a point. Their lives are pointless by their own logic though.

I saw a major art critic saying that Chartres Cathedral was erected to "The Glory of God and the dignity of mankind." And so it was. Without God there is no dignity. Pose all you want. It's just misplaced pride.

What's "wrong" to an atheist. S/he only has "not allowed". I think you might be surprised about what will be not allowed once God disappears.

That's true - you didn't. But you said you wouldn't dream of it. I guess you have your own reasons for that - sometimes I dream of a nice happy hour though (daydream-as in,'what would I love to do after work today?'- it never really invades my nighttime consciousness).

People do what they do and many times they don't even think about why they're doing it. Whether or not a person is an atheist at this point in time, I agree that many of the social mores are based in Christian teachings which were once much more widespread and permeated western societies moreso than they do now. So even if they're not Christians- in some ways they continue to act as Christ taught-(heaven forbid).
I'm not sure though that I believe that a couple of mellenia worth of conditioning will disappear just because people have disavowed the source.

@spendius,
Spendius,

Suppose I am an atheistic scientist dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. Just take me through the "logic" of what you say is my "pointless life".

@fresco,
Spendi, from my perspective the Glory of God amounts to the indignity of Man--unless, of course, we acknowledge that "God" is the creation of Man.

@fresco,
There's an argument fresco that scientists have caused most cancers. Don't you know about it? But for an atheist cancer is pointless as is finding cures for it and for everything else.

If you are a scientist in that field and an atheist you can be garuanteed to be doing it for the status and the money. Don't come the bleeding heart stuff with me old chap.
