@FBM,
Good thought.

Lots to be gained from serious consideration of what is being said there.

I also like to contemplate my favorite bumper sticker:

DEAR GOD, PLEASE PROTECT ME FROM YOUR FOLLOWERS!

@FBM,
I think someone who's daft enough to spend a year as a Buddhist monk has no place telling others what counts as brainwashing.

Btw, the American education system is lacking in almost everything, Michael Moore writes of text books dating back to the 1970s and schools being forced to take on corporate sponsorship just to make ends meet.

It's no wonder that the only teachers prepared to work for such lousy pay are religious nutjobs.

Meaningless ad hom. You apparently have no idea what Buddhist training is all about. It's about un-brainwashing yourself from all the bullshit foisted on you by a society without insight.

Amen, brutha. It's a sad reality back home. Not that it's so much better here in Korea, mind you.

The bullshit about buying and owning more things will make you happy, for instance. Or more generally, the idea that the source of lasting happiness can be found outside yourself.

Really?

Quote:
A Buddhist monk has been charged with raping an underage girl in the 1970s, the Metropolitan police has said.

Pahalagama Somaratana Thera, chief incumbent of Thames Buddhist Vihara, Croydon, has been charged with four counts of sexual abuse, police said.

The alleged rape and three counts of indecent assault occurred in Chiswick, west London, in 1977 and 1978.

You don't come across as very happy. In fact you give the impression that you have very little in the way of a sense of humour.

@izzythepush,
There is no creator god in Buddhism.

You have only my posts here to gauge my sense of humor. Careful about relying on too small of a sample. Wink

I might also say something about the pot calling the kettle black. Hee hee...

When you can get an audience of 200 strangers roaring with laughter, armed with nothing more than a microphone, let me know.

@izzythepush,
You'll be the first to know. I, on the other hand, have had at least 8 groups of 15~40 students laughing (and learning) every semester for the past 15 years. I'm not a mathematician, but...

Students who have got to know you and are dependent on you for a grade. Hardly what could be considered a hostile audience.

FBM...Izzy...

...I think you two are both funny and intelligent...and I am not sure why there is so much animosity between you (or "youse" as we say in New Jersey.)

I realize this is a bit nosy on my part, but can either of you or both spell it out for me so I can understand the basis for the problem?

@Frank Apisa,

I read most of your posts and it is rather evident that there are many things that are "beyond your comprehension."

That is merely a repetition of what I had said except you use "many" where I used "plenty". In my lighter and profound moments I have been known to say that everything passes my comprehension.

It certainly does that you should feel it a duty to address an international forum as if it consists of 3 year olds with an endless stream of banal and very well worn out ideas in the service of the attempted glorification of Mr Frank Apisa and his doings.

I don't like preachy people, especially when they claim to be the exact opposite.

@Frank Apisa,
I don't feel any hostility towards Izzy, spendi or Spade or anyone else as a person. I try to resist their incessant personalizing of the discussion, but sometimes I slip. My real target is crappy ideas.

@spendius,
And it would be useful if you explained just how Mr Rice's lyrics hit the nail squarely on the head rather than simply asserting that they do which takes us nowhere.

I guess we're back to the pot-and-kettle stage, then. Laughing
