Edit: I've spent quite a while in Toronto, and there is no evidence of any more of a religious atmosphere here than in any other North American city, and in fact, there is a high proportion of Muslims and Hindus here, as well as a fair representation of other beliefs. You have no case to make, you're just whistling past the graveyard . . .
What do you call a high percentage?

Religions In Canada

% of Canadians that say they belong to each religion

Roman Catholicism 43%
Protestantism 29.2%
No religion 16.2%
Islam 2%
Judaism 1.1%
Buddhism 0.9%
Hinduism 0.9%
Sikhism 0.9%

Interesting that i mention Toronto, and you run out and get statistics for the whole damned country. Are you familiar with the word disingenuous?

brain keeps body alive.
body keeps brain alive.
oneday ethier one will be damaged and you will die.
death is nothing.
because your brain is dead.
your mind is dead.
therefoere you cannot create an afterlife.
you don't know your dead.
can u imagine not existing?
the meaning of life.
it's to reproduce the human race.
we are animals.
and by some magical miracle we are existing by accident.
we will not ever exist again and so we should attempt to make the most of "life".
i used to be suicidally inclined and then about a week ago.
it clicked.
i am nothing.
nothing matters.
in 100 years time we will be forgotten.

can anyone understand what i'm trying to say?

Human_entity, we are more than animals because we think, laugh, and love. Everything we do has an effect, however small, on the lives of those with whom we share this existence. Everyone matters. You are the center of your universe, and you have the power to change the world, if you so choose. Some people will be forgotten in 100 years (except for a few bones and a name on a tombstone), but many of us will leave a legacy of words, works, pictures, music, and DNA if we have offspring. A few lucky ones will make the pages of history books and be thought about for thousands of years. I don't know how old you are, but thoughts of suicide are not uncommon during adolescence. Stick it out for a few more years and you will be astounded by what life has to offer.

That's the cool thing about being human as opposed to other animals, you get a certain degree of choice about your purpose.

Your purpose could be to write a symphony that millions will listen to for hundreds of years, or it could be to fly a plane into a building to make a point.

Or you could introduce the great-great-grandfather of the inventer of the faster-than-light drive to her great-great-grandmother and not even know about it !

Ain't life amazing ! So many possibilities.....

(unless you're one of those nutbags who believes in destiny...in which case everything is already decided and you're just a passenger)

Set,

I must say those comments by raheel took me a bit by surprise. From another thread I gather raheel is a Muslim. I, whether Christian, atheist, Muslim, etc., do not feel anyone's life is pointless. I am very curious as to why a Muslim would say anyone's life is pointless.

I'm never curious about such things, as i have found they usually arise from a confusion born of unreasoning religious fervor. It is good, however, to know who the potentially loony may be, and take precautionary measures . . . i may be shot down in the street some day, but i'll never be burned at the stake . . .

Set,

I pray you won't be shot down in any street but I get your point.

I just like to know why people think, feel, and act as they do. So many different ideas and beliefs.

What twaddle is this?

I don't believe in your God. I don't believe in the Christian God. I am not of any religion and am verging on the belief that God does not exist. Yet for me, morales are vital for the existence of society and for bringing order to this world.

I do unto others as I would wish them to do unto me. I do not kill other human beings. I do not kill other beings. Certainly, I help those who need help whenever I can. etc. etc.

The laws in all countries all over the world have been set and influenced by religious scriptures. They have, in fact, been directed by religion. If we do not follow those laws, we are punished severely.

Such thinking is poppycock, rubbish, nonsense of the highest degree.

If atheists act morally without any religious requirement to do so...perhaps that makes them more moral than you...better people than you...more deserving of the rewards you have been promised? Bummer !

I always had a problem with those kind of organizations. Most religions fit within that realm.
Do you think that the overtly religous have problems with self esteem?

HMMM, somebody really nasty could start a thread with a name as offensive as this one

You clearly don't have the slightest clue about alcoholism or the programs that help alcoholics. Of course I wouldn't expect you to.

I looked into the "Rational Recovery" website and it seems like a scam to me. They tell you that you're all on your own and that meetings produce dependence yada yada. Then of course they want you to buy some tape that is supposed to cure you!!! I am my own worst enemy. I cannot depend on my own thinking to help me stay sober. I need a higher power. If that's a lack of self-esteem then so be it. It's better then being dead.

You've stumbled across the true reason organized religion (of all stripes) fear atheists of good repute.

If Atheists live by high moral standards and do no harm to others, how can organized religion continue to attract believers who give them power and money if they can achieve it on their own for free? If organized religion cannot perpetuate that hold on people, they will be assigned to the dust bin of history.
