Should he resign? I don't think he has a choice.

Texas Court Issues Warrant for DeLay

By SUZANNE GAMBOA
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A Texas court on Wednesday issued a warrant for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's arrest, and set an initial $10,000 bail as a routine step before his first court appearance on conspiracy and state money laundering charges.

Travis County court officials said DeLay was ordered to appear at the Fort Bend County, Texas, jail for booking, where he'd likely be fingerprinted and photographed. DeLay's lawyers had hoped to avoid such a spectacle.

The warrant, known as a capias, is ``a matter of routine and bond will be posted,'' DeLay attorney Dick DeGuerin said.

The lawyer declined to say when DeLay would surrender to authorities but said the lawmaker would make his first court appearance Friday morning.
The charges against the Texas Republican stem from allegations that a DeLay-founded Texas political committee funneled corporate money into state GOP legislative races through the National Republican Party

Thank God it's just conspiracy and state money laundering charges- I thought he might have had sex with a busty 20 something.

Well, I don't think he need resign as a congressperson, or whatever he is, but he ought to stand aside from his leadership position until the matter is settled, I would have thought.

That is what people in such circumstances do here, anyway, and I consider it a good idea.

I assume that, if convicted, he would no longer be eligible to be in congress anyway?

How come this is such a surprise?

Didn't the press know this day had to happen once the indictments occurred?

Is this the normal thing? Does an arrest always follow a criminal indictment?

Or is this one of these things where a wealthy defendant's lawyer "negotiates a surrender"?

It's a formality, in a sense. He won't actually be placed behind bars. His lawyer will bail him out first. After the trial may be another matter. But, don't forget when the same guy got an indictment against Kay Bailey Hutchison. The judge refused to allow the evidence in his court and the whole thing folded.

DeLay was hoping to avoid a "perp walk" but now he's got to endure one.

They're running ads here, which I see as an attempt to taint the jury pool. Mentions the case against Hutchinson, and urges folks to "call Ronnie Earl and tell him that being a conservative is not a crime."

What pathetic losers. Next time I see the ad, I'm gonna get the number tell Earl what a great job he's doing.
