For example, if you look at the link from Chase bank, you'll see that it actually is supposed to take you to https://www.chase.com~etc. Chase's web address is www.chase.com. But, if you go to their fraud page here, you can see in the 2nd and 3rd examples that those use www.chase.com as well. And link to secured pages (https). And yet they are fraud.
Just be careful what you respond to. If you are unsure, get a phonebook or log onto the company website and get their number and call them. They can tell you if they sent something or not.

Well, I know these are fake because I don't have an account or a card with Chase nor have I ever done more than browse Ebay. If either of those is legit (and they are getting very good at faking them, so even if the link text matches the destination, you still can't fully trust it) then they will contact me after they get the forwarded messages I sent them.
I spent quite a bit of time looking into phishing a little while ago, and most companies will not send you emails like these anymore because of the phishing problem. They will either send you a letter or call you, or if they do send an email, it will ask you to go to their website and log in that way to resolve any issues. It's just my opinion, but any companies that are still sending out legitimate emails in the format of the ones I got should really get thier sh!t together.

PayPal is sending me these, and they DO ask me to log in to the website. But I have never had a PayPal account. I reported one to PayPal, and they told me it was a fake. However, they keep coming........ Evil or Very Mad

Forward a copy of it to the FTC at [email protected]. They are very busy, but they will do their best to try to follow up the link and trace it to the source. In the meantime, you could try blocking the sender in your email's options, provided they come from the same address each time, or report it as junk, if your email has that option. That way, it will just go in the trash as soon as it arrives. Otherwise, you'll just have to learn to ignore them and delete them as they come in.

Thanks, but blocking an address is fairly useless. The spammers keep resending the same message from different addresses. Ever notice how you get the same spam from several different sources on the same day?

The spammers have gotten too clever. I'm afraid we have little recourse now except to pass laws. <sigh>

Yeah. The best you can do is just report them and hope. And, in the meantime, put up with more of it along with the adds for Viagra and replica designer watches "so real you can't tell the difference" and horney (sic) housewives that are waiting for you.

back to mixed up, as opposed to insidious, bulk email content,
this was tacked on at the end of a refinancing offer:

Due to the lack of parking because of the Azalea Garden Party on Thursday, May 11th, we have had to re-schedule our next Captain's meeting for Thursday, May 25th 6:30 to 8:30, Lloyd Hall, second floor. Please let me know if you plan to attend so that we can accommodate everyone. We suggest that those new Captains who did not attend on April 27th, plan to be there on May 25th. There is much to learn.

a little googling revealed that this was the opening paragraph of a letter addressed to participants in the 5th annual philadelphia international dragon boat festival:

anybody from philly reading this, it takes place oct. 7, so you can at least watch it. Laughing

I am a computer geek. I don't mean to offend.

I have found that spam is now pretty easily blocked. I don't understand why anyone is still so bothered by it.

I set up a package called "spamassassin" which is freely available (but takes a bit of tinkering to set up). It decides whether each message is spam or not and puts the ones it thinks are spam in a separate spam folder. Once in a while I check the spam folder (to make sure nothing was labeled as spam that I actually wanted) and empty it.

These packages also learn... you tell the program when it gets it wrong and it analyzes its mistake and does a better job next time.

I get lots of spam... but only one or two a week make it through the filter. Very rarely I find a message filtered that I really wanted.

There are many packages... both free and commercial (with the only advantage of the commercial ones being ease of use) that do this.

it doesn't offend, at all. all i'd like to know is, does it work on Yahoo!? since i use a yahoo account instead of an isp account. of course, yahoo has its own filter, which works fairly well.
