Ha!

From my "Trash" folder, the random bits of "this isn't spam really see all the nice not-spammy text?" that come at the end of ads:

Hey, Tolstoy again!

This one's a subject line:

According to the affidavit, the investigation of Jefferson began in March 2005, when the informant went to the FBI claiming to be "a victim of a fraud and bribery scheme" involving the congressman and two other men -- Vernon Jackson, the CEO of the Kentucky-based high-tech firm iGate, and Brett Pfeffer, a former Jefferson aide who was president of an investment firm owned by the informant.

Bah.

Yep!

Lots of 'em in that category, news snippets for a title, then a short-short ad in the body of the text. This one probably takes the cake for longest subject though.

I get about 25 of them a day, the regular text sans spamfilter triggers seems to get through pretty well.

A little heads-up for everyone - this was in my inbox at my old Hotmail account. I've already forwarded it to Ebay and the FTC, but I figured I'd post it here too, so everyone could see what is making the rounds.

Hey, I got one yesterday from the IRS. That's right, the Internal Revenue Service. Authentic logo and everything. It said my 2005 income taxes had been recomputed, and I am due a $63.77 refund. It wanted me to fill out a "tax refund form" which included listing my Mastercard or Visa credit card number where the refund could be credited.

Hilarious!

These phishers are just amazing. It's just downright funny sometimes with these emails. "Just follow the link below and verify your information by re-entering it all and we'll yada yada yada."
Considering I have no cards or accounts with Chase or an Ebay account, it wasn't too difficult to figure those out. That, and those business do not ever send emails like this.
I get these so frequently that I got the fraud forwarding addresses for the FTC, all the major banks in my area, all the credit card companies, the IRS, Ebay, PayPal, and pretty much everyone else I could think of. I keep the list on my computer so I can just copy and paste the fraud department for any emails I get like these.
What a joke.

tsa, i did get one like that from AmEx, which was actually legit. since i didn't respond, being on a trip at the time, they also left me a phone message. i think a good rule of thumb is, if the links that supposedly go to xxx.com/etc actually point to something else, like 247.016.183.55--i just made that up--then it's not legit.

Well, I know these are fake because I don't have an account or a card with Chase nor have I ever done more than browse Ebay. If either of those is legit (and they are getting very good at faking them, so even if the link text matches the destination, you still can't fully trust it) then they will contact me after they get the forwarded messages I sent them.
I spent quite a bit of time looking into phishing a little while ago, and most companies will not send you emails like these anymore because of the phishing problem. They will either send you a letter or call you, or if they do send an email, it will ask you to go to their website and log in that way to resolve any issues. It's just my opinion, but any companies that are still sending out legitimate emails in the format of the ones I got should really get thier sh!t together.
