She was an exceptional monarch, beloved by many on both sides of the pond. I think that Charlie has a tough act to follow. I wish him luck.

@Mame,
He became king the moment she died.

She was a great woman...and served the people over whom she reigned well and faithfully.

RIP.

I have no doubt that Charles will do a fine job in his role as King.

@coluber2001,
Charles' efforts at conservation and reversing climate change will be severely hampered by him being king.

There's certain things the monarch is not allowed to have a public opinion on.

Either way, I suspect he won't likely be king for too long.

"Too long?"

Meaning "days" "weeks" "years" or "decades?"

@Frank Apisa,
I'm thinking years but not close to a decade. Just speculating. He doesn't seem to be a paragon of good senior health. But maybe that's an unthought out bias.

@Frank Apisa,
Charles isn't a young man, and only time will tell if he's capable of keeping shtum like his mum.

The last series of House of Cards had a king in a similar mould to Charles being forced to abdicate because being too political.

His parents’ extreme longevity may bode well for him.
Deeply unfortunate about the whole *spaniel* thing.

Very sad for me.

I reflect on the many hours I spent at the gates of Buckingham Palace hoping against hope that I would get a glimpse of the Queen being driven from or to that place. Never happened...although during my two years in the UK, I was in London damn near every week-end. The two places I visited on each trip to London was to the Palace...and to the Tower.

I probably spent more time in the Tower than Walter Raleigh.

@Frank Apisa,
I loved the tower! Well, I love all things medieval and this certainly fits the bill.

When I was visiting my cousin, she was living in one of the converted guard garrison cottages for Windsor Castle. We walked to there a few times. Cool aside: The first Lt. Gov. of Canada bought one of my great-great-great grandfather's paintings (Thomas Mower Martin aka TMM), among others, and sent them to the Queen. TMM's is hanging in Windsor Castle. The Lt. Gov. absolutely adored Canada and took up all the winter sporting activities, apparently.

Great story, Mame. I never got to Windsor Castle. Found out after returning to the states that I had a much better chance of seeing the Queen (or her sister) at Windsor Castle.

As the Germans say, "Too late schmart; too soon oldt."

@Frank Apisa,
Windsor was one of her faves. Next time I go, I may try to visit, if they allow it.

Weird protocol, Charles has been officially proclaimed king by the privvy council at St James' Palace.*

The process will then repeated in Edinburgh, and the flags will go up to full mast for an hour before going back to half mast again.

*Despite Buck House being viewed at the no 1 Royal residence, officially it's still St James' Palace which is why our embassies are all officially for the Court of St James.

I thought KCIII address was well-done and pleasing. Positive, kind toward H&M—very lovely to Waleses, his mother.

I wonder if he’ll begin a process of reducing the people and properties that constitute The Firm.

Even as a non-respecter of royalty, I don’t bear ill will toward these people. I do, however, feel strongly that they should begin returning their accumulated wealth to the people of the country and the commonwealth and assiduously decrease the number of people supported by the big dole.

Some jewels sourced from impoverished countries being returned would be a nice move.

Wonder if he will.

Unreal! I just had that very same conversation here at home and read this as soon as I finished the chat with my friends.
