I see. It doesn’t take much reading to get to it.

So, the US constantly runs afoul of the rules.

So, the UN is a waste of money and time.

Insult to injury, Antonio G doesn’t answer my tweets.

@glitterbag,
His comment didn’t answer the question.

It could have been an attempt to affirm yes or no.

Biden's legacy is the UN veto.

He will be remembered for giving the green light to genocide.

The permanent member veto is as much an anachronism as is our Electoral College being used to elect our president.

(Add the 2nd Amendment, as well.)

And both have to viewed in their respective historical context. The League of Nations was similarly formed after a world war in an atmosphere of sorrow, relief, and hope for the future. As you know, the America Firsters of the day – the "Irreconcilables", led by Sen. Borah – refused to ratify the Treaty of Versailles and the L of N. Twenty-five years later, the world had paid an even bigger price for the uncontrolled militarism and nationalism that led to WWII and the victorious allies hoped to forge an effective international organization, without making the mistakes that were made before. Giving the USA a permanent seat was the only way the Senate would approve our joining the international body. As with so many of these agreements, the countries in control were loath to surrender their power, even as political and economic realities changed.

I've long felt there should be provisions for reviewing the effectiveness of laws and treaties, and reforming them, instead of just assuming that, by the jeezus, we got it right the first time. Lawmakers and diplomats are fallible, economies are in flux, and unpredictable events occur on a local and global scale with depressing frequency – and we're stuck, our hands are tied, because 25, 75, or 225 years ago members of the ruling class affixed their names to a piece of ******* paper.

To which I give a heartfelt AMEN, Hightor.

@glitterbag,
To put it simply, many people understand the world like this:
There is the imperial North and the oppressed South, there are occupiers and the occupied, the powerful and the powerless.
In this scheme, Israel is the imperial North and the powerful occupier, the Palestinians are the oppressed South and the powerless occupied.

However, everything that is specific to this conflict, the history and constitution of Israel, the ideology and actions of Hamas, the criteria for what constitutes genocide, becomes invisible.
And even if one wants to understand the state of Israel as an imperial project: no imperial project is like any other, because Jews have no other place where they can feel secure in their existence. Everyone deserves a safe place to live.

^ Excellent summary, Walter.

Back in the day when I was pro-American (more ignorant than currently), I knew the US would never acquiesce to the will of a representative international body and said so here. I still believe NATO & the UN are nothing more than US-owned rubber stamps and proxies.

The UN was a way for the US to manufacture consent, sort of how our collapsing enterprise still tries to convince the citizens that we have a democracy, perpetually commanding them to vote to ‘save’ it. But the US does as it pleases, and it wants all your natural resources. So hand them over.

The only modicum of good news is at least the world sees it now thanks to Israel.

The bad news is nothing short of a miracle can put a stop to it.

Wow, you are fascinating in a strange way.

Sometimes you bump up against the truth. Don't worry, I don't think for a moment it's intentional.

No doubt: world antisemitism is why there is an Israel. The only people and nation thought less of than the Jewish people are the Palestinian people.

Even the US did not want all the Jews that wanted to come here. Jewish immigration to the US during WWII was all but cut off. This only added to the Holocaust. After the war was over, no one wanted Jewish immigration and they didn't want the Soviet Union to claim them. Palestine was their destination.

“Palestine was their destination.”

Why?

Because it suited the geopolitical purposes of wealthy white men.

The Palestinians have been robbed, subjugated, and exterminated since.

@Walter Hinteler,
The reality of the first relocation is the extermination of an innocent population of Palestinians. That is unacceptable.
