This candide character's last response to hightor's question demonstrates what he/she is up to. Ignoring seems a prudent option. Or just observe in the way one might on a trip to the zoo.

Newsmax dude is serious

Quote:
GREG KELLY (HOST): President Donald Trump -- this was technically in police custody today, going from processing into the arraignment. And somehow he looks even more presidential. I'm serious. I mean, we're talking eye of the tiger. This is why so many people are drawn to him, he fights. And, by the way, this is all nonsense. I've seen the indictment and it's a joke. It's even sillier than we thought. Who -- by the way, could you imagine Joe Biden being in this situation? Could he survive? Could he thrive?
...
I mean, this is what they thought Donald Trump would look like. Instead, you know what it looked like? It was back on the Apprentice. There's nothing damaging about these photos. In fact, it's damaging to the people who put him there, okay? It's -- they will be exposed.

@hightor,
Yes, my thoughts as well.

Many years ago when I was experimenting with cartooning, I sent several in to the New Yorker. The response was mercifully polite.

I get sooo much pushback on this (especially angsty pushback, I dare say), but I never get a convincing answer to it:

The Occam’s razor on Merrick Garland is cowardice.
The one thing that binds together all of his action (inaction) on Trump from March 2021 until now like a good area rug binds together a big room is fear.

There is no reason he could not have indicted Trump on the TEN clear counts of obstruction that Robert Mueller investigated and compiled and did not prosecute because Trump was president.

There is no reason he could not indict Trump on the same charges for which they put Michael Cohen in prison. The payoff to Stormy Daniels has been proven illegal and proven to have come from Trump.

Garland came into his office on the heels of the insurrection of 1/6. He knew just like everyone knows who was behind the insurrection. But he has gone about, prosecuting every doofus water carrier and confused MAGA patriot he could find, ignoring the source of the whole thing.

I think it was Hightor that asked me after one of my Garland rants, “But what would Garland be afraid of? How does that make sense?” (Paraphrasing from memory)

I’ll tell you again: I think he just doesn’t want the smoke that might come from being the one whose name would be identified with convicting Trump of federal crimes against our nation - serious charges, with real prison punishment. I think the intimidation tactics of all those goons who worship Trump have been effective on Garland.

All these lesser charges being pursued by lesser authorities are fine. May they all bear fruit. But the crime this nation needs retribution and reckoning for is the attempt by a former president to hold his office and overthrow the legal results of an election using coercion and force.

It’s Merrick Garland’s job to deliver that justice.

He has failed, and if he doesn’t get Trump, he has failed.

@izzythepush,
Here’s the thing Izzy, that I think all of the defenders of the status quo are missing:

It is ALREADY TOO LATE. We are OUT OF TIME to go from
indictment to trial by federal prosecutors before Trump becomes the 2024 nominee. And if you think they’re hesitant to go after him because he’s the GOP front runner, how eager do you think they will be to go after him when he is actively campaigning to be president?

@hightor,
You don’t see a huge difference in McCarthy forcing the Taiwanese official to meet in the US?? It is a massive difference diplomatically. US dignitaries meeting in Taiwan is an affront to China.

Forcing a Taiwanese official to meet in the US was a diplomatic nod to China.

Pelosi’s trip was a slap in the face.

You’re either ignorant of the Taiwan/ China situation and related diplomatic protocols or dishonest.

Wonder which one.

This canceling / shouting over people with different ideas is why democrats are hated—and isolated from reality. Lefties, Libertarians, anarchy syndicalists, independents, Greens, Republicans—everyone else who didn’t drink your psychotic KoolAid is getting together to rid the country of Democrat poison.

Attended my first meeting last night. 🇺🇸

Yes, I may be ignorant of the specific diplomatic protocols; I wouldn't have posed the question if I knew the answer, right? But whether I see a difference isn't the issue – what does China think?

Quote:
China condemned both the United States and Taiwan for Ms. Tsai’s visit using bellicose language, though it fell short of laying out any specific military response. The Chinese Ministry of Defense warned that the People’s Liberation Army “maintains high vigilance at all times, resolutely defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” and said it opposed “the leader of the Taiwan region slinking to the United States under any name or for any excuse.”

In a separate statement, the foreign ministry called the meeting an act of “U.S.-Taiwan collusion,” and warned that China would “take resolute and vigorous measures to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Garland knew the case against trump was obviously flimsy and embarrassing. Soros found someone who didn’t care about that and made him a millionaire to ignore it.

Republican megadonor Harlan Crow on far right, Thomas beside him, Mark Paoletta (conservative activist, represents Ginni Thomas, former chief counsel and assistant to Mike Pence), Leonard Leo (head of Federalist Society and the main figure who has strategized stacking the courts with conservative judges), Peter Rutledge (was law clerk for Thomas, takes pro-business cases, worked in John McCain's campaign) at Crow's exclusive private resort in the Adirondacks.

ProPublica has an important piece up on the the millions of dollars worth of gifts Thomas has received from Harlan including yearly stays at exclusive resorts, vacations on Crow's super yacht, private jet flights, etc without disclosing them. Story Here

@blatham,
You beat me to it, just read it on Forbes.

Clarence Thomas Has Reportedly Been Accepting Gifts From Republican Megadonor Harlan Crow For Decades—And Never Disclosed It

Unfortunately, the quote is true.

Quote:
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
While ProPublica’s reporting is likely to further increase pressure from the left for Thomas to be ousted from office, it’s unlikely that will happen. Supreme Court justices, like presidents, can only be removed from office through impeachment, which would require a majority vote from the House to impeach him and a two-thirds majority in the Senate to remove him from office. Given the House’s GOP majority and Democrats’ narrow majority in the Senate, that’s unlikely to happen.

@blatham,
People are speculating on what the stains were on Trump's court outfit

Quote:
Donald Trump is making news for all the wrong reasons.

The former president was arrested and arraigned at the New York City courthouse on 34 felony charges, including falsifying business records to allegedly pay hush money to adult-film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal during his 2016 presidential campaign.

While people are focused on the legality of all this and what it means for his political career, other people couldn't help notice that his suit jacket that he wore to court yesterday looked pretty grubby.

A menswear writer noticed stains on the coat, said they were formed from makeup and offered some tips about how to remove them.
