@hightor,
Quote:
The characterization of a decision to make sure the Trump Organization does not continue to break the law after a pattern of fraudulent behavior as “Communism” is a product of the U.S. interpretation of the 1991 fall of the USSR. Republicans then made the mistake of assuming that democracy and unfettered capitalism always traveled together. Over the years, Republicans have largely ignored the “democracy” part of that equation and continually doubled down on the idea that the American system means that businesses should be able to do whatever they wished. In that warped formulation, any oversight must be like Soviet-style communism.

Dang. That's a bright observation.

As she's been pushing that lie for the past ten years with no success she should accept defeat.

I think that's even less likely than it is she'll ever own up to being wrong on the story she's currently been pushing or honestly citing the source she initially drew from.

But there's another aspect to her project where she can claim some success - distraction. Steve Bannon has been forthright in acknowledging a strategy he employs in his agitprop, namely, "flood the zone with ****". This not only draws attention away from what is true but also leads to political commentary getting tied up in totally fake issues rather than what is important. What are the chances she'd ever post a Heather Cox Richardson piece?

Two new books make a devastating case against claims that the Constitution should be interpreted on the basis of its purported “original meaning.”

This is from the New York Review of Books
I haven't read it yet (waiting for my hard copy to arrive to give my eyeballs a rest) but Cole is always well worth reading. Posting for those who might be interested.

People can get her daily newsletter for free by signing up at the link. I do post these pretty regularly because they often include historical information which provides a perspective that might be missing from a reporter's story. And they provide a good contrast to some of the less reputable articles foisted on the site by eager purveyors of misinformation.

@Mame,
No, that is not true. It's not the odd one or two who are behaving this way, but a whole majority of a main political party who seem to be doing previously just unacceptable behavior in order to win over voters who like it and vote for people who do it. It's like the world has gone into an ugly place of no return.

@revelette1,
Snood made a smart observation a couple of days ago which others have also made. He said, "The cruelty IS the point".

More broadly, as others have suggested, such breaking of moral and legal norms looks to be a purposeful display of power. This is Trump's gift to the modern American right and they've quite eagerly followed his model. Blatant lies, cheating, cruel insults, etc are not moral failings, they are both funny and admirable.

Much of this has earlier origins, for example, the Brooks Brothers riot in 2000 (Roger Stone being a key player). But Trump has jacked it way up. Now, if things go further south, the right will have no trouble whatsoever in recruiting cadres of brown shirts ready and willing to assault or even murder those deemed the enemy. This isn't merely partisanship. It is "partisanship" as conceived by psychopaths.

@revelette1,
That's what I said - mentally defective. Or maybe it's morally defective. The world has always had leadership like this, but not normally such a large proportion of the population that accepts or ignores it.

People have been slave-trading for millennia and still are. This is behaviour which is utterly unjustifiable, but completely and seemingly acceptable by many. Morally defective. That's the only explanation.

Groups have been and still are being persecuted for a host of reasons - again unjustifiable but accepted by many.

Human beings can be and have always been disgusting towards one another. I hold no hope for future generations. I'm not depressed - just realistic (or maybe fatalistic). There is no justification for this hatred, prejudice and persecution.

Just to make this as clear as possible.

What verification means now: We've confirmed this person or company is who they say they are.

What verification will mean in the future: I have $8.

Elon could still back out of this, but that's the fundamental change that he's proposing.

He's told advertisers that twitter won't be allowed to become a "hellscape". A lot of those big advertisers obviously don't trust him, now pausing their association with twitter. And this move (along with huge cuts in staff) suggest that his need or decision to recoup the expenses of purchasing the site and running it look likely to achieve the opposite of his promise.

Newsmax is just asking questions: “I’m skeptical. Maybe this is exactly what they say, but I have my doubts. They’ve gone into hyper exploitation and spinning mode. They’ve just been weird about it. Was her husband a victim of a crime, or is that family .. I don’t know.”

Tweet posted with video of the Newsmax show that features this chyron...
"WHERE OH WHERE IS NANCY?"

(wracking my brain to recall where I've heard this stuff before)

@blatham,
I don’t mind at all supporting the main stream narrative when I see film footage of 1. DePape breaking in and 2. who answered the door.

Security footage is available from multiple angles.

The Pelosis can easily stop questions immediately with two small snippets from the reams of footage their security provides them.

Honest people share video proof.
Dishonest people find lame excuses not to.

I strongly prefer that their narrative is true.
I’d like them to make it clear.

Not only is that extremely simplistic, but it doesn't cover all situations.

What makes you think you or anyone else deserves to know anything about this? How is knowing going to affect your life? Why do you care? Are you related to them? It's an event that happened to the husband of someone who wasn't even home. It's none of your business.

Why not concentrate on suggesting solutions to problems instead of blowing this minor thing out of proportion?

Because I don’t want to confront that the power behind the Democrat party was able to force law enforcement and the SF DA to cover a lie for them.

I’m sad to know how little you care about those in power being accountable to those of us who give them power.

They are being paid by my taxes to administrate this country honestly and responsibly.

If they are corrupt—which they damn sure are—they should be held accountable.

Because of your attitude, you deserve whatever **** they perpetrate on you, but I—and millions more—don’t. We care about what our elected (?) officials are doing in our name with the power they derived from us.

They owe us legal behavior and transparency.

They don’t deserve to be able to break laws that they hold me accountable for.

JFC. Who am I on this planet with.
