I think at this point, Biden hate is coming up against a reality that Biden is shaping up to be a remarkably effective President. Biden ran as a negotiator, a cold warrior, someone who could navigate the political process and get things done and we all scoffed. "Both your car and your politics are stuck in the 80's!" Except that suddenly we're back in the Cold War and Biden's response, both in the immediate run up to the Ukraine invasion and afterwards, has been nothing short of brilliant. Russia was counting on shock and awe plus the fog of war to delay the European response until Ukraine was a fait accompli. What happened instead is the US broadcast all of the Russian moves ahead of time and had all the allies on board for sanctions so that there was no surprise and no delay in enacting sanctions and providing aid. At the same time, he provided no pretext for allowing Russia to credibly drag NATO into a wider war. On the politics front, working with a bare majority and not a single Republican who will negotiate, Biden has been working the Senate and ends up with bills to fight climate change, build infrastructure, return chip manufacturing to the US, forgive some college loan debt, etc. These are huge wins. We haven't had any sort of infrastructure package in a while, across administrations of both parties. Now the administration has staved off a railway strike without banning the union from striking, preserving the economic recovery and providing a win for labor. A year ago, a Biden hater could look at the record and laugh with satisfaction. Today, it takes a true diehard to not grudgingly tip your hat to Biden.

From the start, the Disinformation Governance Board looked like a political caricature dreamed up by people who never appreciated either Monty Python or Orwell’s 1984. Given the Biden record, it was unclear whether the new board will be fighting or promulgating “disinformation.” After controversy erupted, an unnamed DHS spokesperson told the Washington Post: “The Board’s purpose has been grossly mischaracterized; it will not police speech…. Its focus is to ensure that freedom of speech is protected.” Geez, why didn’t the Founding Fathers think of adding a clause to the First Amendment creating a nefarious-sounding government agency to ride shotgun on the nation’s media?

The Department of Homeland Security is setting up a Disinformation Governance Board to try to counter the spread of false information. The board will focus on disinformation coming from Russia as well as misleading messages about the U.S.-Mexico border, the Associated Press reports.

The immediate focus will be on misinformation from human smugglers, who spread false claims about U.S. border policy to migrants to help drum up business.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during a briefing Thursday that the board will tackle misinformation on a range of issues, and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said part of its intention is to counter misinformation in Hispanic communities especially.

The fact that some of you actually believe this is even funnier.

I saw an explanation for what motivates Trump supporters that rang absolutely true.

They don’t measure his success by what he does FOR them, they measure it by what he does AGAINST people they don’t like. That’s why they see him as “successful”. And why they will NEVER abandon him.
