$65K in what currency? A 528i is a five year old vehicle - they don't make 'em anymore. US$ 20K max.

For US $65K, you should be able to get a NEW Mercedes e430 V8 with all wheel drive, and a Honda or two to drive when it's in the shop.

That was about when BMW almost went outta business. Then they came up with the brilliant plan to merely double their price and people were snagged.

I carpooled to college with a guy who had like a 1969 (used) a 2002, talk about an upside down bathtub. As I recall, it really drove well and was quite peppy.

(Actually, the crisis of BMW was in the 50's.

The then CEO Hahnemann said, he wouldn't export any car anymore - so importers started to order hundreds, thousands (the one for the small country of Denmark ordered 1,000).

So, money came in, and BMW was able to by in 60's a smaller firm[Glas]. The BMW 2500 in 1968 finally made BMW second to Mercedes.)

.....but only second Walter Wink

Considering the maintenance and hassle a BMW dealer
is offering, I definitely would opt for the Mercedes.

A 2-door car is good for singles without children and/or large
families, or as a second car (in that case I'd get a Porsche).

Then why not fly to the states, buy a car, and ship it back?

Here, they advertise "european delivery" for BMW's and Mercedes as a cheaper option, with a tourism bonus. What gives?

Jeez - only 50K in 5 years! The thing would scarcely be run in yet!
Can I borrow your car next time I'm in UK? I love to drive and there must be somewhere in that little country you could stretch it out! At least I'd see a bit of the country. Cool

I'd go for the Merc, or VW. A friend here drives a Passat and absolutely loves it. He especially likes the understated luxury and comfort - that doesn't attract attention. He chose it over both those other options. (but then he is a lawyer Twisted Evil )

As I was motivatin'
Back in town
I saw a Cadillac sign
Sayin' No Money Down
So I eased on my brakes
And I pulled in the drive
Gunned my motor twice
Then I walked inside
Dealer came to me
Said Trade in you Ford
And I'll put you in a car
That'll eat up the road
Just tell me what you want
And then sign on that line
And I'll have it brought down to you
In a hour's time
I'm gonna get me a car
And I'll be headed on down the road
Then I won't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford
Well Mister I want a yellow convertible
Four - door de Ville
With a Continental spare
And a wide chrome wheel
I want power steering
And power brakes
I want a powerful motor
With a jet off - take
I want air condition
I want automatic heat
And I want a full Murphy bed
In my back seat
I want short - wave radio
I want TV and a phone
You know I gotta talk to my baby
When I'm ridin' alone
Yes I'm gonna get that car
And I'm gonna head on down the road
Yeah, then I won't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford
I want four carburetors
And two straight exhausts
I'm burnin' aviation fuel
No matter what that cost
I want railroad air horns
And a military spot
And I want a five - year guarantee
On everything I got
I want ten - dollar deductible
I want twenty dollar notes
I want thirty thousand liability
That's all she wrote
I got me a car
And I'm headed on down the road
No money down
I don't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford

a car
walter : i think you are right, that must be a "goliath". the only other three-wheeler i remember was the "tempo". the company my dad worked for had a tempo and i was on occasion allowed to sit next to driver when some goods were to be delivered in the port ... and i was even allowed to turn on the directional sign (those litttle red fingers sticking out from the car - oh, what fun ).

in 1950 i was rich enough to buy my own motorcycle, a "imme" (it sounded like a wild hornet when driving at top speed of about 65 km/h ... and no safety helmet !!!). sadly, i had to leave it behind when heading to canada.
btw it might be suitable transportation for anyone wanting to beat the traffic congestion in london. i recall that the advertising featured someone driving the "imme" down a railway track ! it's unique suspension allowed it to overcome many obstacles. i at one time didn't slow down when coming home and went right over the curb and up on the sidewalk, without much harm to driver or motorcycle. hbg
