New car - suggestions needed !!

Reply Fri 1 Jul, 2005 07:52 am
Ok guys and gals, it is time !!! I have been dragging arnd my old banger for almost 5 yrs now, and even though it has done only 50K miles, I think it is time to relegate it to the dustbins of history. ( Ipaid 1200 quid last service cause I needed a new cam belt and tracker rod !! Shocked)

Now the problem is what to buy. There are three choices I have infront of me (considering that I do not want to spend more than 35,000 quid - $65,000 approx)

1. Mercedes E220 CDI Avantgrade

I like this car, it is elegant, beautiful, safe, drive likes a dream. The trouble is, am I old (and more importantly) mature enough for a Merc?

2. BMW 528i

Its a Beemer, what else can I say. Problem is the shape is a bit iffy, maintenance is a bitch, but then again, IT IS A BEEMER !!

3. The New Passat

The most sensible option in my opinion. However, the model I want (New Passat SEL Auto) does not have a launch date as yet, it is almost as expensive (according to the sales man it would be abt 25,000 for a fully loaded model) but by god it looks gorgeous.

I dont want anything flashy (it has to be a saloon as I get a lot of family from India) and dont want a 4X4 (lil'k would kill me + I wont be able to park it anywhere where I live)

So What do I do ?

E 220 is too small for the price, take the larger version.
Maintenance is completely free of charge for the first years,
and the great service (free loaner) is an added bonus.

BMW 528i - the new one looks kind of boring and interior
room is tight (especially in the back). Maintenance can
be a hassle and the arrogance of the personnel as well.

Passat - probably a good choice, maintenance should
be less frequent and affordable, and the service adequately.

Why don't you buy a british product?

Why not but one of these-

Kit Car from Knight Rider
The A-Team van.
The General Lee frome the Dukes of Hazard.

they may be cheaper and would do your street cred no end of good.

I personally like the VW Passat. It's an understated elegance and a very fine auto. Not as snazzy and showy as the other two. Between the BMW and the Mercedes, I'd go with the BMW simply because I like them more.

Pfft.... don't want to spend more than $65K? Are there cars that cost more than $65K?

I loved hamburger's Passat. Love Passats generally.
Would buy a VW if I wasn't addicted to Honda/Acura.
I'm already dreaming of the next two.

Do you have a personal mechanic who can travel with you and a Mercedes?

4 door? <sigh>
that is so freakin' grown-up.

Bimmer. Why would you even consider anything else?
VW is sensible. WHO wants sensible? If you get a bimmer, you'll get that happy tingly feeling year, two years from now. Not with VW. Besides, they dealt with the Nazis, if that helps any. Helps me, I'm never buying a VW, though it's decades ago.
Mercedes? Eh. You're too young and too fun.
BIMMER!!! Bimmer. Bimmer bimmer bimmer!

dag : if you are truly concerned about about past nazi connections you better not stand next to a bimmer and you certainly would not want to drive one. hbg

The difference between a Porsche and a Porcupine is with a Porcupine the prick is on the outside. Well, anyway I drive a Porsche 911 and I think next year they are producing a 911 4-door. (aerodynamic as a pound-cake)

Saw a Maserati while I was driving downtown this morning.
I guess I'd never really looked at one.
Thought it would make more of an impression.
Only looked at it, really, as I was really pissed with the stupid driver.
I thought it was an old Toyota at first.
Confused

It's no Jaguar in looks.

First, scratch the VW. It's a VW. You're a f'n executive, for chrissakes.

Between BMW and Mercedes: do you actually ENJOY driving, or just want a luxo-cruiser? If you like driving a performance car, go with the BMW hands down. Go with the Mercedes if you don't care about the driving experience as much and you like the fit/feel better. They're not as "tight" driving as BMW's.

The poll shows 1 vote for each car - that should help me make up my mind !! Laughing

Slappy, even I was thinking abt scratching the VW, though the new model looks very nice. THe problem is that with the traffic in LOndon - and the sorry state of our motorways (you cant do more than 70mph) and I hardly drive out of town - the pleasure of driving is something which you hardly get. And if you are just sitting in traffic for hrs on end, then I would rather have a comfort and luxury, so am leaning towards the merc !!

ehbeth - would love to get a 2 door sports, but I like big cars, who knows when the oppurtunity to use the back seat may arise !! Twisted Evil
