Last weekend there was a shooting at a food festival in California....Today, in El Paso, Texas, there are multiple fatalities in a shopping center as customers shopped for back to school clothes and supplies. Police announce 'suspects' are in custody.

@oralloy,
Your sympathy with the multiple people killed in the shooting is well noted.

The ever growing number of these things and people being killed and injured (both physically and mentally) is outrageous. The number of children on the list is well beyond tragic.

My wife got the news flash on her phone just minutes after the shooting occurred, but it took the local TV news almost an hour to start reporting on the incident. There were many conflicting reports such as how many shooters were involved. At first it was reported that there were four shooters. Now, the police have stated that there was only one, and that he's in custody. The number of casualties varied, from 18 to ten, then one confirmed dead then more.

The shooting occurred at a WalMart next to a Cielo Vista Mall, but then it moved over to the mall. Right now, the police are clearing out WalMarts and the shopping centers near them all over the city. My brother in law works near a WalMart miles away from the Cielo Vista store, and the police cleared out that entire area. They had to close shop for the day. The number of dead isn't confirmed, the local media just stating that there are several dead.

Someone probably saw a team of police entering the scene and thought they were the shooters.

18 people dead at the scene, ten injured transported to University Medical Center of El Paso, then one additional death among the hospitalized.

I believe the number of injured transported to the hospital has since increased: three more to the aforementioned hospital, and another ten to other hospitals. Two of the injured are aged two and nine, and are at a children's hospital.

They've issued an appeal for blood donations:

Without reading the articles about it, I suspect it is by haters of non white ethnicities, who legally bought killer guns. **** the gun nuts and the newly "respectable" racism.

Nineteen dead, 40 injured. A manifesto was found on social media, but has not been released by police.

We'll see if this reporting holds up but who'd be surprised if this is exactly the case
Quote:
A manifesto purportedly written by Crusius, perhaps even in the hours before the shooting attack that according to one report left at least 15 people dead, was left behind. Pages of the manifesto included anti-immigrant rhetoric with the author going into depth on why he is “against race mixing,” supports the idea to “send them back” and offering a prediction of “genocide.”

The right is NOT going to take responsibility for what is going on in their world. Jennifer Rubin has it right - the GOP is irredeemable and has to be crushed.

The President tweeted about the shooting at 4:10 p.m. Eastern time, following his well-wishes to those affected with a tweet cheering on the MMA fighter Colby Covington, 14 minutes later.

@blatham,
Trump's a big fan of Jesus, well.......he used to be until he learned he was captured. Trump prefers his Messiahs not captured, he hates to tell ya.

This thread is now out of date, another deadly shooting in Dayton Ohio.

@engineer,
In an online document, the suspect denounces Hispanic people in Texas, cites concerns about losing American jobs to automation and criticizes both political parties. The text includes a reference to the Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand, which left 51 people dead.

The Interplay of Manifestos and Right Wing Media Dialogue

Authorities are still sorting out the background of the gunman in this horrific far right terror attack in El Paso, Texas. But he appears to have left a “manifesto” and a lengthy social media trail. Assuming these identifications are correct, they portray a sadly familiar “great replacement” theory white supremacist radical.

What is particularly notable in this case is the intermingling and co-evolution of these manifestos with more mainstream righting media dialog.

There’s abundant evidence the shooter is a big fan of President Trump and certainly of his worldview. And yet the manifesto includes a sort of preemptive rebuttal of any claims that he is a Trump supporter or that Trump influenced. He predicts that “the media” will identify him as a white supremacist and blame President Trump’s racist and xenophobic rhetoric for radicalizing him and provoking the attack. Such claims would be “fake news” and such claims will indeed only prove that “the media” is “fake news.

After these horrors, we expect rightwing talking heads to attack any suggestion that these attacks might be related to the President’s politics and rhetoric. But here the assailant is doing so himself in advance. Indeed he denies Trump’s influence by using Trump’s signature attack lines. For someone who specifically denies Trump radicalized him, he’s very focused protecting the President. He doth protest rather too much.

The gaslighting is actually baked into the attack itself. He wants to be both the assailant and part of the post massacre spin and pro-Trump defense.

Oh goody. More opportunities for leftist virtue signalling.

(Just to be clear, I'm not accusing you of doing this.)

What is virtue signaling?

@thack45,
Quote:
Virtue signalling is the conspicuous expression of moral values. Academically, the phrase relates to signalling theory and describes a subset of social behaviors that could be used to signal virtue—especially piety among the religious.

An idiomatic expression commonly used to describe the thing is "holier than thou".

But as used by oralloy and others who are drenched in the modern right wing world, it refers to anyone on the left who advances complaints based on moral convictions (or anyone on the right who might echo such convictions that those on the left advance). For example, moral complaints that men, women and children are having their brains, guts, eyeballs, craniums splattered across schoolroom floors and the walls of nightclubs and shopping malls by young males using weaponry designed specifically to kill and maim as many humans as possible in the shortest period of time possible.

Another example would be someone like oralloy conspicuously expressing moral outrage when somebody with diarrhea squats down and let's loose a river of steaming liquid **** all over the Stars and Stripes.
