Rayban - Um, Actually, BVT/Bear is a "tatooed, long haired freak." He has managed to stop snorting cocaine long enough to read several books just over the last two weeks, numerous editorials and even a couple of Sunday papers cover to cover - except the Sports section.

He hasn't rubbed shoulders with any pinko intellectuals that I'm aware of, unless I am one, and in which case I guess I would say "Thank you." But, for the record, I've never been to Hollywood.

And, as a fairly successful musician, Bear has never had desire to have his picture taken with any new stars. Well, at least not for the purpose of musical self promotion.

Your stereotyping is quite interesting, though.

As others have already pointed out, musicians have been making political statements for years. MTV woosed out. The younger crowd already knows this about MTV. They aren't the MTV of the 80's anymore.

Um honey, I haven't snorted any cocaine in many years. Just wanted to get on the record with that....hey..what are those black cars in the driveway? Shocked

Glad to be of service.

Gonna put on some Helen Reddy and relax by the pool. I like her political statement! Laughing

(I don't like Nine Inch Nails either or any of that other raucous stuff, but they have as much a right to sing in front of a picture of our president as anyone else.)

Yeah. You are a fount of correct information.

(LOL!!!)

The Church went amok when she did it. Remember NBC's response?

My youngest male cub really loves SOAD...I like them pretty well in small doses, we've been listening to the edited version of Mesmer Eyes fo a week now.

It takes a LOT of stamina to play that music. It's a workout. And I like the fact that they are expressing their dissatisfaction with the System through their music. Just heavy metal CSN in that respect.

Seems to me that NIN was stifled because their image was of Bush. Had they wanted to make a statement about Nike or Gap vis a vis their sweat shops in SE Asia, or about global pollution, MTV would have willingly complied. Had they made a mockery of OBL or Saddam, they would surely have complied.
This is yet another illustration of the Bush administration's unwillingness to be on the receiving end of bad press...and I'm sure MTV was acting in a way to ensure future prosperity and longevity.

You know, truthfully, I think MTV may have been worried about Nike or Gap, too. The money (advertising) issue, and liability, too.

Re System-- You're right about the workout. They are wild. I really like BYOB. Did you catch them on SNL?

Snort.

I agree that MTV would worry about Nike or Gap, too, or anything else that would impede their prosperity.

Which I understand, but I think is dumb. For them more than anyone else since it's so much of what they're supposedly about -- cutting edge, hip, yadda yadda. Maybe they can get Madonna to kiss a starlet again. (Yawn.)

IMO,......MTV management reacted in a very responsible manner when they astutely recognized a scurrilous attempt by this group to obtain instant global fame and notoriety from the uproar it would have caused.

Laughing Thanks to the adept handling by the MTV management we weren't needed.

don't get out much, do ya ray ?

nin has had global "fame" and, more importantly to the CorpRock corporation, intl., huge sales.

here's something for you to think about though...

before this "brouha" hadn't come up, had you ever heard of trent reznor or nin? if not, you have now, haven't you?

a page or so back, it was pointed out that music has had an important voice in social and political debate over the last several decades, and that is true.

but the heart of rock is rebellion against the "establishment" or whatever. trust me, if you're hearing a "rock" song with lyrics about puppy dogs and flowers, it ain't rock and roll.

that said, i'm not too surprised that mtv punked out. that channel has never had much to do with rock and roll (new wave was just watered down punk pablum for the masses), and has even less relevance now thanks to its incessant parade of whining adolescent "viva mi ego" shows that act as nothing more than bumpers for mtv's real purpose, selling sneakers, oxy-5 and hair products.

the last thing that mtv wants is to be targetted by the "boycott brigade".

so, tails wagging, they follow there hearts, maintain integrity and carefully, respectfully, affix their lips to the ass of corporate america.

Since I'm a newbie here I would like to hear your commentary on why you think this is an important political item and why we should hear it. While you're at it I would like to hear your opinion of the real reason "long nails" attempted to use Bush's photo as a backdrop and whether or not MTV management acted responsibly.

there's an old saying, "if i gotta tell ya, you're never gonna know".

as for mtv acting responsibly;

do you really think that nin performing in front of an unaltered image of dubya would harm america's children (as if...) more than the 24 hour a day rotation of rap videos that glorify guns, calling women bitches, hard dope and racisim ?

Ah....whatsa matta don't you believe in the American dream? Frank Sinatra? a good example?
