yes.

And we have the right to remember who our friends are.
And which corporate toadies, who are supposed to be the forward thinking producers of ROCK AND ROLL, act like boy scouts when push comes to shove.

Okay. Now we know.

Since I'm a newbie here I would like to hear your commentary on why you think this is an important political item and why we should hear it. While you're at it I would like to hear your opinion of the real reason "long nails" attempted to use Bush's photo as a backdrop and whether or not MTV management acted responsibly.

I'm facinated that you care so much about me. As for an answer though, I'll say "no."
You can figure it out.

Well Lash I can offer this tidbit, you would be comfortable in Plato's eyes (the paragon of Greek Philosophy that has wreaked havoc for centuries) anyway he desired that all artists of any type (music-drama-literature-sculpture, etc) be banned from his Republic because artists are easily capable of destroying the image deemed nescessary to mantain the authority of the state. A touch of irony in the old Plato in that he was regarded as an artist in his own Athens.

What a perfect opportunity for Bush supporters to rally around. Oops.

A missed opportunity.

IMO,......MTV management reacted in a very responsible manner when they astutely recognized a scurrilous attempt by this group to obtain instant global fame and notoriety from the uproar it would have caused.

Laughing Thanks to the adept handling by the MTV management we weren't needed.

You can't say anything you please here. Does that violate your right to free speech? You can't do as you please on someone else's dime.

So what, it still has a chilling effect on free speech. Control the media and you control the masses.

Instant what? Look, fellas, there's someone on the MTV thread who's never heard of Nine Inch Nails...!

I feel for you. I too am a old fart who, that morning I stared at the NYTimes listings of the top ten best selling albums and didn't recognize a single name, I knew that I had reached middle age, or the beginnings of my dotage as it is referred to around here, but even I have heard of, and heard, Nine Inch Nails. It pays to have a youngish wife, one who listens to RadioIo or MoonTaxi on the computer. (Oh, those are Internet Radio Stations, not musical groups.) Occasionally, amidst the crashing and screaming and monotonous looping looping, I will overhear something melodic.

I no longer ask who it is. The stare is unbearable before the answer "The Killers" or "Sleater-Kinney" or "Say Hi to Your Mom" arrives. I don't know what to say.

But if I seem old, just think about how old MTV is going to seem to all it's fans.

Very Happy You are absolutely correct Joe........but I would prefer to say that my appreciation for music has not sunk so low that today's crapola noise could possibly be classified as music therefore why would I want to know anything about the worst of the worst. If they are anything like the other groups of tatooed, long haired freaks that inhabit that world, it is even more disgusting that they would have the audacity to attempt a political statement. How could they possible stop snorting cocaine, or whatever it is they snort, long enough to read a book or an editorial The nearest they ever get to knowledge about politics is rubbing shoulders with pinko intellectuals who invade the one continuous party in Hollywood, hoping for a photo op with some new star that flashes across the horizon, but is gone in the next instant.

and now we have the exceptionally well reasoned offering of rayban1, the colour for today is pinko. remember folks get a haircut and improve your reading skills. I wonder what wearing boxer shorts will do for my IQ and will listening to Guy Lombardo put me in a higher tax bracket? (that little fag got his own Jet Airplane, that little fag's a millionaire, got to move these refridgerators, got to move these colour t.v.s.

Yet, they were going to nominate Bono to run the World Bank and he turned them down. (Someone pm rayban1 as to who Bono is)

Some music is crap, some musicians are crappolo too, some however are tuned into the world which is why they can write the songs. You probably have that one by Barry, 'the songs which make the whole world sing blah blah blah'....

I still betting that if a group wanted to sing a re-make of the Green Berets, "fighting soldiers from the sky...'', they could do it in front of a George Bush backdrop. And the director would make the camera guys search the audience for tear-filled reaction shots.

Somebody hand me a flag, I feel a chill coming on.

Rayban - Um, Actually, BVT/Bear is a "tatooed, long haired freak." He has managed to stop snorting cocaine long enough to read several books just over the last two weeks, numerous editorials and even a couple of Sunday papers cover to cover - except the Sports section.

He hasn't rubbed shoulders with any pinko intellectuals that I'm aware of, unless I am one, and in which case I guess I would say "Thank you." But, for the record, I've never been to Hollywood.

And, as a fairly successful musician, Bear has never had desire to have his picture taken with any new stars. Well, at least not for the purpose of musical self promotion.

Your stereotyping is quite interesting, though.

As others have already pointed out, musicians have been making political statements for years. MTV woosed out. The younger crowd already knows this about MTV. They aren't the MTV of the 80's anymore.

Ah....whatsa matta don't you believe in the American dream? Guess not......and you would rather replace the big bands and Frank Sinatra with high school drop outs whose only encounter with knowledge was a shout (above the din of noise they call music) that Noam Chomsky had just made another speech praising Castro.

reality check rayban...Frank Sinatra and the rat pack were hard core alcoholics, pill freaks, adulterers and the rock stars of their time. Frankie pulled his unit out so much he made Bill Clinton look like Bishop Fulton Sheen.

I liked him and his terrific voice. I also like a lot of rockers including the tattooed ones. You should widen your focus and understand that musicians are pretty much the same, regardless of their styles, and just because the sound they make isn't pleasing to your ears that doesn't mean it doesn't resonate with other people.

And that's what art is buddy, something you put out there. If it resonates with someone, it's a success and it's real art.

If you don't care for all the angst and anger that's expressed by and for the young "freaks" of today, maybe you should consider it's the people you support who have created the angst and tension filled world that draws it out in them.

But you won't. Laughing

Now can we get back on topic? MTV=establishment candy asses. No one watches it around here.

Well, I have to admit that I had never heard of nine inch nails before yesterday. I do know some young singers but they're more laid back like five for five or R.E.M or something. I went searching to see what kind of music they played and they are too hard rock for my taste.

Which has nothing to do with nothing. This is simply a matter how far this administration with the help of it's cheerleaders are going in tearing down this country into some kind of undemocratic country.
