Dammit Squinney! That stinks!

Please - if the damn eye being collapsed will help, do it - don't they give you heaps of happy juice to not be traumatised by it?????

Happiest thoughts winging your way.

There is a very interesting article in the current issue of Esquire about a man who had his sight restored, after 40 something years of blindness, using a new stem cell therapy.

New treatments are in the works!

Amazing things are happening!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for amazing things for squinney.

Squinney, so sorry to read this news. I'm looking into your eyes, chanting "get well, get well---right now."

Your brain is so fascile that you will learn how to compensate and overcome any sight impairment. The Bear will be great support.

I had an eye scare last month. Thought my retina in my right eye had torn but it was just a large piece of the protein in the rear of my eye that tore. My eye doctor checked me out this week and I'm OK. Damn floaters; they are annoying, but as long as my retina didn't tear I will quit my bitching.

Actually, these stem cells were taken from a donor cadaver's cornea so maybe Jesusland doctors will rally to the treatment and maybe other similar treatments are becoming available to treat a variety of eye problems.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about this, squinney! I wish you didn't have to go through all this! Will say a special prayer for you right now.

I lost about half my hearing last year, so I know it's no fun losing your senses. Just don't lose your sense of humor. It'll get you through.

So true. After losing my central right vision in '89, my brain "adjusted" my central vision so that I could still read. (Try looking at this page with just your left eye, then just your right, then just your left again. See how the page "jumps?") When it was thrown off again by losing peripheral in my left eye in '97, I adjusted agian. The doctor was AMAZED that I could read at all. He asked me how I did it so he could tell his other patients. I said I had no idea unless it was because I loved to read, and refused to give it up.

Course, I also loved to crossed stitch, but that didn't adjust so easily and my fingers got tired of putting up with the brunt of the pain due to lack of coordination! Very Happy

The brain is certainly an amazing thing.

Boomer - Stem cells are doing great things with eyes. I'm just not sure it would work for my condition since the problem is new blood vessel growth that has to be shut down.

Steroids are another treatment possibility, but hey, I wouldn't wanna be called in for Congressional hearings!!!

You'll be in my thoughts, squinney. This sounds pretty scary! Please keep us posted.

In answer to your question about what blind people do to entertain themselves: my mom lost almost all of her vision a few years ago due to optic nerve damage. She's a retired art teacher, and was very involved in the local art community and loved to play duplicate bridge and Scrabble. She has found new activities - she goes through books on tape at a furious rate, listens to NPR or some of her hundreds of CDs when she's not "reading," and has recently taken up knitting again. She still teaches an art class to some of her fellow retirement-community residents once a week, but now it's art discussion instead of drawing and such.

Squinney- (((((HUGS)))))

I think that you will start to feel better, when you have developed a modicum of control over your condition. Check out schools for the blind, and learn some skills that you can use if your sight worsens greatly. Check out support groups both in your community, and on the internet. I took a quick look, and both Yahoo and MSN have groups for people with low vision. Learn braille. Hopefully, you won't ever have to use it, but just being proactive, IMO, will be very comforting to you.

Start developing interests that involve senses other than sight. Collect CDs of your favorite music. Check into books on tape. The more that you "get a handle" on the possibility of worsening vision, the easier time you will have.

Worry? Of course you will worry, squinney, but the main thing is that you keep, as much as you can, the right frame of mind, and I truly believe that the eyes will follow.

Squinney--

How very distressing. You must find it very difficult to consider yourself an ept and graceful lady--whack! there goes another dish!

I don't know why you shouldn't have a Seeing Eye Bear--I know you have a Boost Ego bear--to say nothing of a tear-the-hair out bear.

How very distressing.

Hold your dominion.

Thank you all, again.

Great links and support! You all are the best!

Noddy - I got it!!!! A Do-the-Dishes-Bear!

(wonder how that would go over)

Looks like I'm on a wait and see what happens course. No insurance. No assistance from Services for the Blind unless we make less than $652 a month for a family of 5. Make too much for medicaid, plus it would take 45 days to process. Doc has to be paid up front and treatment runs into the thousands. (Almost $10,000 for the last round but we had insurance then)

Appears the same today as yesterday, so maybe it won't progress. I have a graph paper to look at and keep track of changes. Will just have to keep praying.

Oh Squinney, I just found this thread. Hang in there kiddo. Have you contacted some of the University Hospitals in your area? You might find a study to enter where your treatment would be paid for.

I'll keep you in my thoughts. You're one of my favorite people.
