Update.
Fred and I met for coffee on Friday. He told me how much he loved my
daughter and that they planned to marry and wanted my blessing.
And of course I gave it.
Aw! George, that is soo sweet. Were you a bit choked up?

Not sure if George was - but I sure am. It brings tears to my eyes. Congrats George to your increasing family.
I can only hope my husband would act so sweetly as George did when the times comes. I can picture him now - the poor guy would not have a chance.

Well, part of me did want to mess with his head just a little.
But I'm too much of a softie.
Besides, I'm the least of his problems.
His mom is still not completely reconciled to not having a Jewish daughter-in-law.

awwww, here she goes, your little girl. You must have
mixed emotions George - I would!
Watching "Meet the fockers" would be an ice breaker with the future in-laws, I guess.

Yeah, lots of mixed emotions.
Luckily, she goes to school only ten miles from us.
So, I've met Fred and he's been at various family gatherings over the last
year and a half. Gave me time to deal with it.
Meet the Fockers -- hmmmm...

Ahhhhh, congrats to you, your daughter, and Fred from me too!
I hope to wait at least 10 years before we're in the same position, but I applaud Fred for approaching you to have the discussion and to you for making it easy for him to approach you.

Who is planning the wedding?
Who is paying for the wedding?

George, this is for you, love:

Papa Ki Pari
Ladies and gentlemen...
A son is a son, 'til he gets himself a wife
But a daughter is a daughter all her life!
Papa ki pari hoon main, oh oh ho, oh oh ho
Aayi main aayi neele gagan se
Laayi main laayi taaron ko chunke
Mere liye jo bana hai, sun le jahan tu chhupa hai
Paana mujhe mushkil hai, phoolon jaisa mera dil hai
Aakar dekh le
Papa ki pari hoon main, oh oh ho, oh oh ho
Mummy ke dil mein ek baat aayi
Jaldi se ladki ki kar doon sagaayi
Ladki ka pehle photo dikhaaya
Phir mujhse poochha, pasand aaya?
Maine kahan na re na na na na
Ladka jo dekhne aayega mujhko
Na main sharmaaoongi na palkein jhukaaoongi
Na muskuraaoongi na main rijhaaoongi
Na main usko chalke dikhaaoonga
Chaahe kahe voh mujhse, waah waah waah waah
Oh oh ho, oh oh ho

Paana mujhe mushkil hai, phoolon jaisa mera dil hai
Aakar dekh le
Papa ki pari hoon main, oh oh ho, oh oh ho
Sab ki sunoongi, dil ki karoongi
Aise vaise ko main na chunoongi
Maine yeh kab se soch liya hai
Parkhoongi usko, phir haan karoongi
Varna kahoongi use, jaa jaa jaa jaa
Mm, mera jo hoga kuch aisa hoga
Jo pyaar bankar dil mein rahega
Mummy ko meri samjhega Mummy
Papa ko mere Papa kahega
Phir main kahoongi use haan haan haan haan
Oh oh ho, oh oh ho
Mere liye jo bana hai, sun le jahan tu chhupa hai
Paana mujhe mushkil hai, phoolon jaisa mera dil hai

Oh oh ho, oh oh ho
C'mon, all girls here on stage please
Papa's darling daughters, join in

Congrats To you and your daughter, George.
I remember asking my FIL for his blessing... it was very intimidating. I'm glad you took it easy on him

Oh so your future son in law (son in law - I'm sorry, are they married) is chinese? How do you feel having a chinese in the family? I would like to know as I want to have an idea of what my dad's reaction might be if I took home a western or european guy.

To clear up the confusion:
I meant that a conversation between me and my (then) future
father-in-law would have been difficult. He was Chinese (and spoke no
English) whereas I am of Irish descent (and spoke no Chinese).
He did not have a problem with my being non-Chinese (or "lo-fan" in
Cantonese slang). My wife's older sister helped, having married and
subsequently divorced a real jerk (also Irish-American) some years
before, which made me look good by comparison.
To add to the diversity, now I am about to have a son-in-law who is
Jewish.
