It's a privilege to have half known a guy who looked like that. I'll bet he was great company. He was on here. In the pub would have been something else. He invited me to his place once and although I don't fly I was really tempted. Veblen comes from Wisconsin so timber had half my heart by proxy to begin with.
He gave me the Indian derivations of a few place names once and he knew a lot of stuff. He sure did know how to get his picture took and he had a crazy way with words that I really loved. And he seemed always ready to help anyone who asked.
I have to forgive him for shooting all that wildlife he said he shot because I guess that's how he was brought up.
He had a bad diet though. He told us about his breakfast once and it was disgusting. Two pork chops. For breakfast. Plus multifarious trimmings. I told him about it. He scoffed at my lettuce sandwiches.
Fair enough. He had been in a war zone so it's permissible to laugh at danger after that.
So now he's gone. Things will not be the same.
I was tempted to comment on his not posting but I refrained because I know these sort of things happen. I won't be feeling like going on the Trivia threads for a bit.
Are there any more pictures?
And thanks E and wande.

ehbeth said she will post more photos later.
Spendi, have you seen jespah's excellent thread on timber?

I've always had in the back of my mind an image of Timber as looking like Justin Timberlake. I see that I was way off. Our Timber looked much better. What a face! (even better than Dyslexia's).

Thanks again, ehbeth! This thread greatly benefitted from timber's well-informed comments. And we all benefitted from our individual relationships with timber. (Timber would have been amused watching Spendi bumbling around trying to find Jespah's thread. )

The death of Timber, who was a real voice of reason on this and many threads, just lets us realize how inconsequential , yet precious our interactions are. We can keep his spirit alive when we interact on potentially volatile threads. "How would Timber sound?" Hed be forceful yet reasonable. Hed only demand the facts and would eschew the personal.

In January, I directly asked timber if I should close this thread. He replied:

Prolly not - the only benefit I can see there would be to please spendi, and why on earth should that be a factor?

I didn't know you had the power to close a thread wande.
The only factor involved in closing a thread is the decision by anyone with the power to close it. Why I should be a factor escapes my comprehension. I have no view either way on such matters.
I can't see why the question would be asked in the first place.
Why did you ask?

I apologize if I offended you, spendi.
In January, I felt I was repeating myself and wanted to close the thread. Timber's sudden passing has also made me wonder if I should no longer continue this thread. I looked backwards to see what advice Timber had given me.

I can't understand why you might want to close the thread when it's the obvious mainstay of the S and M forum. Often in the repetions there was a spark of something.
If the thread fades away like a flower in the fall then that is nature taking its course. Why would a good Darwinian wish to divert the natural process by his own actions?
Is your garden well clipped wande?

I ought to add wande that you couldn't offend me no matter how hard you tried.

I once figured that infinity was best understood by imagining all the things it was best not to do.
