Does Bush's religious faith inappropriately dictatate policy

That's something we can agree on - I don't have any pressing need to know about my president's faith, or lack thereof. But, I'm afraid with the kind of scrutiny they undergo, we all have to accept it's a subject that will unavoidably come up. At that point, everyone has to decide for themselves which of them wring it for mileage, and which are not trying to self-aggrandize, but just quietly stating who they are.

That's the point, I think, Snood.

Someone said something smart today (caller to radio show): Don't think of the Bill of Rights as a list of rights given to you by the government; think of the Bill of Rights as the tight leash on government.

It's hard for me to imagine any candidate in American politics having a chance of winning an election if he does not identify himself as a Christian. Leiberman is an interesting possibility. Maybe we'll get the chance to see. But even Lieberman is highly religious. Can you imagine any candidate for President answering a question from the press with, "I'm an agnostic. I like to depend on scientific inquiry for my guidance.?" I think a candidate for president has to put on a show of religious belief, or the American public will not bite. It's a shame, but I believe it's true.

Very true, Lola. Or an unmarried candidate, or a black (I know, I know- you'd have all voted for Colin Powell), or a woman, or a gay....

Don't know about Colin Powell, Snood. maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe I would have. But we never got a chance to really get to know the guy. Anyway he's a Republican and you know about them. But I damn sure would vote for Denzel. He's a beauty.

But someday, Snood......don't you think? Women and minorities, unmarrieds, gays......someday. However, I suppose it's true that a woman would have to pretend to be a man and the black, white washed. Unmarrieds and gays celibate. But agnostics?

Well, that gives us something to work for. And our first task is to get this proselytizing, overzealous, addictive personality weirdo out of the White House and back in Crawford where he belongs.

I don't think your examples of the unelectables to be at all comparable. There is, I think, a very good chance indeed that a black or a woman could reach the presidency in my life time. A jewish man, possibly. A gay, an atheist, or a Buddhist/Hindu - there is no chance at all. But of course, the US is still the most freedom and equality loving and open-minded culture in the history of the universe, that goes without saying.

"...reach the presidency..." -- summoning up the image of some perfectly decent person slipping down a treacherous slope into a vast cesspool of Bushit.

"I think" being operative here - still just opinions. I think a sizeable number in this country would execute themselves before allowing a woman or black as pres.

"That goes without saying" - I'll take your word for it since I haven't been everywhere, but can't help but notice that you said it anyway.

Nope -- I agree with Blatham though with the caveat that it is more likely to be a Powell-like situation. Good guy (or woman) used by dirty pols. As for the self-executions -- I think that's off target too. Mr or Ms Whoever would get a rah-rah welcome and then be sniped at constantly. Very similar to the Clinton presidency and for many of the same reasons -- who was it who said he was the "first black president"?

I think there are people posting in A2K right now who will live to see the first woman president. I would not be surprised to find that they will see the first black president also -- although I am not suggesting a black woman will be elected president.

I hope we are past all the nonsense that would make that an unrealistic possibility.

I had a lot more respect for Colin Powell before the last few months. I am quite negative on him at the moment.

Powell sure hasn't done himself much good here of late, but then I doubt he really has any aim on The Oval Office. Lots of Democrats are aiming for it, but none of them appear to be anywhere near "On the Mark". Again, its early, and things can change in a hurry, but at the moment, The Democrat's prospects are getting bleaker poll-by-poll. Perhaps the best they can hope fopr is that The Current Administration peaks early and allows The Democrats an opportunity to catch up. However unlikely that may be, there is always hope. Then again, it takes a lot more than hope to get anything accomplished.

Oh Timber, I think you're fooling yourself. The election is a year and a summer away. That's plenty of time for Bush/Rove to get so cocky (as they are now) they will shoot themselves squarely in the foot. I think actually, they're doing it now. They're all heady with the recent "successes" and when people like this (those who use religion as a crutch rather than a resourse) succeed, they quickly defeat themselves. I think it'll be fun fun fun to watch. Just stay tuned and we'll see.

I would place a "Jewish Guy" among the unelectable. Not that I think that Leiberman would get elected regardless of his religious persuasion.
