That would be nice if they did remove it.
I agree with colorbook about asking someone to change it, but I would feel wierd about doing that since the ' new person' wouldnt haveknown him anyways and wouldnt see the significance..

I wouldn't feel "wierd" about asking a new person to change an avatar. If I was the "newbie" I would readily agree even though I never knew the person being honored. It's called Respect.

Here's a poem for Cav... His ability to really know poetry, music and food was extraordinary. We'll be missing his voice as long as a2k is around.

Solitude
When you have tidied all things for the night,
And while your thoughts are fading to their sleep,
You'll pause a moment in the late firelight,
Too sorrowful to weep.

The large and gentle furniture has stood
In sympathetic silence all the day
With that old kindness of domestic wood;
Nevertheless the haunted room will say:
"Someone must be away."

The little dog rolls over half awake,
Stretches his paws, yawns, looking up to you,
Wags his tail very slightly for your sake,
That you may feel he is unhappy too.

A distant engine whistles, or the floor
Creaks, or the wandering night-wind bangs a door.

Silence is scattered like broken glass.
The minutes prick their ears and run about,
Then one by one subside again and pass
Sedately in, monotonously out.

You bend your head and wipe away a tear
Solitude walks one heavy step more near.

I did a little alteration to Cav's clown avatar and thought I'd share since I've also posted it on my blog page.

If anyone has objections to it, let me know and I'll destroy it.

Yes. It's hard to A2K at the moment. Everything leads back to this thread & it makes me cry, every single time.

It was a great pleasure to know Cav ...his beautiful spirit and wit lives in these pages..It has been wonderful reading about how he has affected each of us in their own special way...I have a hard time articulating how a cyber "stranger" can touch my emotions as deeply as Cav did...I am honored to have met him, if only online, for i am sure his true essence was given to us...a blessing...

I agree with others that his avatar should be retired...a small way to honour a man who touched so many here...

ps and thanks joe for that expressive poem

The Eulogy
Hi everyone,

Thank you for the honourable tribute to our Cav with his avatar. He would love it, I'm sure.

I just want you all to know that, although Cav is gone from the apartment and from our apartment's kitchen, I do know that he will always be with me, through his 21500+ posts online here. I have some comfort knowing that when I do feel like I need to "hear his voice", I can come here, search for his user name, and read some of his witticisms, philosophies, or even recipes, and it will be as if he never left, but just in the other room, watching TV or something. I need that right now. And probably for a very long time.

I think someone said this earlier, but I can't remember who, "Nobody ever really dies on the internet. They're just offline for a while."

ehBeth and BoGoWo did an amazing job reading Cav's poem and a few of his posts yesterday. We thank them very much for representing all of you. ehBeth left a copy of the Wake that she had printed out, and later on in the evening, as things were winding down, people picked up the printout and wanted to know more about this site, and what it meant to Cav. And so, I did my best to try to explain the history of Cav at Abuzz and a2k. I think there may be many more people joining up just to read the wonderful words and legacy of Cavfancier.

ehBeth asked if I would post my Eulogy (thanks to whomever helped me correct my spelling...), so here it is, for all of you. I think he would have liked it, at least I hope he did:

Paul and I spent a lot of time watching television together. It was what we did best, and it was our favourite activity to do together. We both had many favourite shows, some of them in common, like the "Law and Order" franchise, some of them not so much in common, but we tolerated it. One of Paul's favourite series were the "Star Trek" series of shows (except for Enterprise).

When Paul was in the hospital earlier this month, he got to see his favourite episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", called Darmok. In it, the U.S.S. Enterprise receives a signal from the Tamarians, an alien race that has no history of violence, but whose language has been deemed "incomprehensible" to humans. Picard and Dathon, the Tamarian captain, make several attempts to communicate over their viewscreens, but neither can understand the other. Suddenly Dathon turns to Picard, armed with two daggers, and both captains dematerialize and are transported to the surface of the planet below.

On the planet's surface, Dathon continues to offer Picard one of his daggers, but Picard refuses on the grounds that this could be an act of war. Dathon is friendly, however, and offers Picard fire against the evening's chill, allowing Picard to sleep. Hours later, Picard wakes up to find Dathon missing. He looks through his personal belongings to get some clue as to what makes the alien tick, but is interrupted by Dathon's voice and the roar of an animal.

Pursued by a large, shimmering beast, Dathon again offers Picard his dagger and this time Picard accepts. As the two captains struggle to communicate in order to fight effectively, Picard hypothesizes that the Tamarians communicate by example, and the proper names and places they cite are references to situations in their history. Picard is then able to begin to communicate with Dathon, and the alien responds enthusiastically to his efforts.

Unfortunately, Dathon is struck by the beast. As the alien lies dying, Picard realizes that the situation of two leaders joining to fight a common enemy is part of Tamarian mythology, and suddenly understands that Dathon brought him to the planet specifically to fight the beast with him and begin relations between their societies.

The crew finally transports Picard back aboard, and he avoids war with the angry Tamarians by using what he has learned to communicate with them. In their own language, he tells them how their captain died and expresses his admiration for the man. The adventure behind him, Picard is left to wonder if he, too, would sacrifice his own life simply for the hope of communication with other beings.

Paul told me once that he felt like Dathon the Tamarian captain, because he had all of these ideas to express, and wanted to express them all at once, but somehow, he felt that he couldn't quite say exactly what was in his mind.

Paul spoke in a metaphor all his own. He was extremely creative, as a chef, of course, a songwriter, a poet, and most recently, a short story writer. He had a way with words that all could appreciate, but only he knew the true meanings of their metaphors.

With the amount of people who have called, e-mailed, posted, and the like over the past two days, I hope that Paul knows exactly how much of those emotions and beliefs he communicated to the world. He touched everyone who knew him; you remembered meeting him, talking with him, e-mailing him, posting with him... He was so loved. I hope he knows just how much. Especially by me.

I am now left here, as Captain Picard, to interpret for you all of those ideas and feelings that he had in his head and in his heart. I am here to tell you the story of his battles, his triumphs, his successes, and about my admiration for this man. I am here now, left to communicate Paul's language to all of you.

That was beautiful buttercup.Im sure he was listening intently, because weve all had conversations with cav where the metaphors just rolled off the keyboards, and wed have to tune in early to catch the drift of conversation.

I have a little thought to share but not right now, Im having some problems seeing the keyboard.
