Rice und Schröder: Scherze und gute Laune

seems to me that a lot of this started with this (middle of a series of three photos in Spiegel) <First posted on A2k on Feb 4. Amazing what you can find with an a2k google search> The photos peeved a few, as did the suggestion that there was a change in the wind in re the U.S. stance toward Europe.

QUESTION: Do you think that you as a woman Secretary of State are treated differently? There is press coverage here in Europe. One headline called you "coquettish" with Chancellor Schroeder in Germany. Here you've got Rafsanjani in Iran saying that you are "emotional." Is there an extra burden that a woman in your position carries where you are interpreted and viewed within a certain framework?

SECRETARY RICE: Well, I don't know, and I don't think much about it. I will do what I do, I'm a package, I'm who I am and that includes being female. But I think as Secretary of State I've got a job to do. I'm delighted that I have an opportunity at this historic time to try and help the President, to try and help our friends and allies move on this historic agenda. It's a great time for those of us who believe in these values. It's a challenging time. There are a lot of difficulties and a lot of hard times ahead, but if we put our best efforts to it, if we put our minds to it, I believe that we have a chance to leave a more permanent peace and, most importantly, a balance of power that favors freedom.

There has been an element of chauvinism about the reception the first black female secretary of State received in Europe. A German headline called her "coquettish."

In an interview in Rome on Wednesday with NBC News, Rice shrugged off such labels. "I will do what I do," she said. "I'm a package. I'm who I am, and that includes being female."

Yes ehbeth, they're saying in your quoted article (Spiegel)
that Rice and Schroeder have chemistry.
He's been married four times, so I'm certain he can charm
a woman (at least initially Wink )

All in all it is just a cultural difference. The Europeans like
to flirt and be coquette and the Americans think it is
discriminatory and sexist. http://www.borge.diesal.de/schiel.gif

When is the last time they commented on Bush's suit, or Colin being coquettish?

It is sexist. A reason to be mad---probably not. But, call it what it is. She's obviously being treated FAR differently that men in comparable positions.

Highly sexist.

(Walter--get a grip. You can't expect to be right 100% of the time. Hell, I only hit it 96-97%.)

CJ-- I guess after twenty requests for proof it was said--you're quiet about it now. Read a paper once in a while.

Sheesh.

Okay, Lash, as already suspected: your German really must be much better than CalamityJane's and mine.

Not only that: you even know more about us and use of our language: wow!

It's just customary to put a source to one's claim, isn't it.

Women are always treated differently as men,
and that's a good thing. Of course, you're entitled to your
opinion, but don't asume it was the intent of either Schroeder
or other european leaders, it is just your very own perception alone.

Lash: I think the real message from these people is "think as we do." Tow our line. Don't insult, but be accepting when we do. Blah, blah, blah.

I now understand why so many Abuzzers wanted no part of this community.

Due to difficulties with their server, I only could get access to this blog by an online dictorionary.

They suggest there, that "kokettieren" should be translated by "to croy" in the meaning of ''a pretence of being modest'':

Walter-- Look. Just give up. I'm not going to rub i in your face or anything. A coquette is a flirt. The definitions you have brought say the same thing in various words.

A coquette is a flirt.

Although I have sincere doubts that the

is a correct medium for understanding the German language, it certainly explains, why you understand it so perfectly.

It is only customary when it isn't common knowledge and widely known.

Anyone who reads the paper or watches the news--and has done so in the last four or so days-- would have known.

And, wrong again. It is NOT my perception alone. How would you know? You've already proven you don't read the paper. How do you know WHOSE perception it is???

I had a revelation about this thread on the way home.
Kept trying to figure out why all the fussing sounded so familiar.

Finally realized this is the International Forum version of life as a teen.

Donna likes Dorian. They've been friends for a long time. Dorian doesn't like Darlene. As a matter of principle, Donna doesn't like Darlene either. She doesn't really know her, never had much interest in her. Just knows about her from Dorian's stories. Donna backs up Dorian everytime she's nasty to Darlene, cuz everyone "knows" Darlene's just awful.

But wait. Dorian went to Darlene's for dinner. They were seen laughing together at the mall. Dorian didn't talk to Donna before or after she went to hang with Darlene.

Donna just can't believe that Dorian went to Darlene's or that they had fun together. Or if she did, it was just because Darlene had something Dorian wanted. It just couldn't be anything else. The idea just makes Donna feel sick, and wanna spit. She doesn't care what anyone says.

The gagging noises are making even more sense now.

ehBeth--

You don't seriously think the Bush administration has changed their minds about France, Germies et al, do you?

You never fell for anything else they did so quickly. But, hey, if Europe and Canada... are all happy with the Bushies---hey, I won't complain.

Actually, it's great. (Condi must have put something in the water over there...)
