@Eva,
I toast to that: to good friends!! (even though those Slovaks drink the wine themselves)

Mmmm.... I can't have wine for breakfast. But I'm checking in now so I can raid later whatever supplies my good friend Eva brought home from the North-West. To good friends!

I'm sorry you have all had to enjoy Letty's champagne and the cakes that Osso and CJ brought without me. I've been downloading photos and sorting them today. Tomorrow I will tell you all about my trip, I promise!

In the meantime, drinks are on the house tonight!

<Jacques frowns...Don't worry, dear, we can afford it.>

I have pictures to share, if anyone is interested. I was in the Pacific Northwest last week.

Jacques will be happy to pour you a glass of your favorite while I explain them. <Sorting through photos, trying to decide which to post first...>

Oh, look what Sophie has made! A chocolate raspberry tart using the berries I brought home! Who wants a piece?.........

@Eva,
I will pass on the tart Miss Eva but I'd love to see the pictures. Perhaps I could have a glass of sparkling water?

@Arella Mae,
Certainly!

Here's the first photo. The red dot on the right of the photo shows the location of my sister and brother-in-law's house. They live on the shore of Puget Sound near Anacortes, north of Seattle near the San Juan Islands. The view from their house is into Skagit Bay (just above the red dot) and its islands.

Sorry about the link instead of the photo itself. I cannot seem to make the photo the right size. It is either a tiny thumbnail or too large for the screen.

3:30am and I am still up. Why can't I sleep? Oh, I know. Because I didn't have champagne, strawberries, and chocolate yet.

Most of the year it's too cold and grey up there for me, but it is absolutely gorgeous in July and August! And such a welcome break from the 100 degree temperatures here at home. It may have reached 80 while we were there, maybe not. I know we needed jackets and sweaters a lot of the time, especially mornings and evenings.

Why have I never heard of this speakeasy?

Can I enter? I brought a wonderful bottle of Australian pinot noir.

Quote:
R Wines Permutations Pinot Noir 2008
Pinot Noir from Victoria, Australia

winemaker's notes:
A productive vintage with excellent conditions throughout the summer. A warm period at the end of harvest delivered a range of maturity levels across the components which contributed to complexity and structure.

A light, bright and fresh Pinot Noir, well structured with savory, complex characters and nice texture. Rich plum, red berries, beetroot and herbal notes on the nose, with berries and rosemary following on the palate. Subtle, sweet dark fruit, toasty oak and fruit of the forest.

critical acclaim:
"Bright, medium red. Alluring, spicy raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by white pepper and fresh floral qualities; smells like a Chambolle. Nervy red fruit flavors are impressively precise and gain sweetness and depth with air. Offers true pinot finesse and texture, with no rough edges or excess weight. A juicy, arrestingly pure wine, with excellent finishing clarity, bite and lingering sweetness. This is an excellent value in pinot noir, from anywhere."

View from the bridge at Deception Pass, about a mile down the road from my sister's house. Deception Pass was named by early day explorer George Vancouver, who felt he had been "deceived." It is a passage from the Pacific into Puget Sound, but it is not apparent from the sea. Deception Pass State Park is the most frequently visited state park in Washington.

The colors are so rich there - down here, most of the landscaping is brown by now, so I appreciate such lush greenery and the water seems so clear and blue too.

@tsarstepan,
Tsar! I'm so glad you found us! We've been closed for a while, but I'm back in town now.

(aside) Jacques, would you bring us some glasses? This wine looks like a perfect match for Sophie's tart!

Oh, forgive me. Jacques is our sommelier here. He knows much more about wine than I do. I just enjoy it. And Sophie is in charge of the kitchen. Just ask for anything you like. She can whip up virtually anything.

@CalamityJane,
Yes, the colors are very vibrant when the sun is out. Everything seems to sparkle. Water colors vary from blue to turquoise...you will see what I mean. Too cold for swimming, though. Let's see...which picture is next?

@Eva,
Let me step outside for a cool minute so I can give the dogs a quick walk I'll be right back.

Does your kitchen have any fresh mocha mousse?

View from their deck, across the neighbor's yard. Deception Pass State Park is across the water. The dead tree at extreme right is a regular perch for a pair of bald eagles that fish in the bay. Here's one of them (below). Hubby took this photo standing below the tree with a 10x zoom.

My sister and brother-in-law rebuilt their house from the ground up during the past year and a half. They did a lot of the work themselves. Here's the same view as above, from their living room. And a shoreline view of the back of the house, which is mostly, but not entirely, completed.
