The cabinet guy just left. The kitchen's going to look wonderful. The cost was high, but not as high as I had feared. He figured in some things like inside the cabinet veneers because he though I was going with a darker stain.

The more I think about the floors the less likely I think it is that there is wood under there. I'm still holding out hope, but ...

Beth, we should plan an Iowa A2K meeting about the end of March. BYOPB (Bring your own pry bar.) Everyone is welcome!

Soz, I'll bet you have bootiful floors under all that carpet. Rip it up, I say! What do you have to lose? You can rent those big floor sanders and refinish it yourself. (She says, knowing how much work that is.)

This is the floor plan. The frig is on the bottom wall. I think you can figure out the rest. Try to ignore teh gibberish. It's just cabinet sizes.

Looks good, Swimpy. Nice to have a nook there in the corner (and all that handy storage underneath).

I like it that the cupboards go all the way to the ceiling. You won't have to be dusting there and it will give you more storage.

What does your window look out on?

I'm not going to leave them up long, Beth. Most of you know who I am anyway. OK one more. This one went a bit wonky when I scanned it, so tilt your heads.

Piff, the window looks out on the backyard. Yea, I'm looking forward to the storage. It will be easier to access, too. We still haven't figured out how the nook is going to be in reality. A fixed table is going to make accessing the storage under the bench a bit tricky. I like the idea of a free standing table.

Oh, that looks great!! Very similar to ours in a lot of ways. We have a nook with a high table sort of thing -- on the same level as the rest of the counters -- with cupboards underneath. We use bar stools with it. It's kind of a hassle to get at the cupboards underneath, but we figured it out pretty quick and now it's just second nature.

Looks like a really efficient use of space.

The crown molding will be gorgeous.

Well, if you're like me, you've got things that you store but don't use too often.... Christmas dishes, partyware & baking pans... so slightly inconvenient storage wouldn't be too much of a problem. I like the idea of a freestanding table, probably an oval one to cut that corner. You'll probably want back cushions so it is going to be hard to judge exactly where a fixed table would go comfortably.

You've got a lot of room for wall art which is nice. Mr.P's cousin was a food writer and wrote once that every kitchen should have a mirror for the cook to freshen up. I am imagining a pretty one just to the right of the microwave.

I was thinking of an oval table too. Or maybe a drop-leaf. And wall art...oh yea.

Soz, Crown molding is way elegant.

The contractor called today. Final costs should be ready on Saturday. Then we can order the cabinets!

Er, me, I'd want that sink level to go to the end (the corner), that dive down seems odd to me personally.
(You asked, I am not a quiet sort all the time.)

And I might make that corner a storage pocket, if it is a intermediate space for different levels.

And why in the world are the counters at different levels, do you want them at diff levels? Are they 34 or 37 or what?

I gotta speak up and say the elevations don't work to me, I hope you take a day to think about it. Don't just grasp happily what they dial up.

I was assumming that it is bench seating around the table. The levels seem fine to me, you don't want the table to be too high.

If you are worried about access to the bench/cabinet you may want to consider a hinged top and the doors secured shut or just have the fronts attached.

Swimpy, one very important measurement to take is the distance between the counter top and the bottom of the wall cabinets. Will your tallest appliance that you leave out on the counter (such as a stand mixer) will fit under the cabinets? I can't put my mixer on the counter under cabinets on the wall-side of my kitchen. It has to go on the Peninsula next to my sink and diswasher that doesn't not have overhead cabinets. Too many kitchen designs don't provide enough height to accomodate applicances, especially ones that too heavy for easy moving.

Thanks for all your concern Wink I'm very happy with all the elevations. Osso, I've lived in this kitchen for almost 26 years. I'm confident with the design of the new layout.

This L-shaped kitchen bench was designed for the seats to lift up for storage underneath. The storage area is approximately 11 inches deep and 16 inches wide. In oak with a varnish finish.

Something like this may help maximize your storage.
