littlek, I bet Tightywhities has been complaining about you guys to his friends just as much as you guys have been complaining about him. Maybe one of the things he's been complaining about is how much you're on the computer -- the noise bothers him or something, who knows. I could see it being analagous to one of us showing up at your house and, seeing him do something messy and ridiculous, taking him to task.

Kind of what I figured. But, I don't *think* the noise would bother him. I play it very quietly. I was think more along a social complaint. Like, they never do anything, they just sit at their computers. I think he was hoping for friends when he moved in - or at least people to do things with.

No kidding! If I was playing Pacman, he'd have a point.

I was sort of shocked. It was surprising commentary from someone I'd only spoken to three times before. Maybe it's a cultural thing.

He's Australian. He's a man. You're a woman, hence in need of teaching how to live your life. Or so it seems to go with some of them (or so I was told just recently. Friend of mine claims that Australia is among the most sexist societies on this planet).
I bet you were shocked, it's just plain rude. Catches you off-guard. I never know how to respond in such situations, only in retrospect...too late.

...but i think it's a great idea to be learning piano or languages on friday evenings. i mean, isn't that what everybody wants to do on friday night after a long week of work? we should buy a piano. he can come give us lessons.

That's a great idea. You two should learn piano, especially while your roommate is trying to sleep. Even better, one of you should sing while the other plays.

That makes sense, drumming looks fun.

However, before investing all that $$ into a drum kit, I would start by practicing with your pots and pans on the kitchen floor.

Or his head.

Seems like it would make a nice, cavernous, echoey sound.

I recently picked up some lovely Moroccan bongos. Small but effective.

I just got lectured by his Aussie friend. Ozie came into this room (doors were closed) asking what I was doing. I was playing a computer game (morrowwind). He asked some questions and I went out to talk with them as they were getting ready to go out. He said I could be learning other things with more value than I was playing the game. Like I was wasting my time. Which I am. I told him that I was a little addicted and that It was a good distraction because I am broke and it's free fun. He told me I was being irrational for using a financial excuse. Huh? And then I told him that learning piano or languages (his examples of a better endeavor) would cost me money, but that this didn't. He obviously thinks I am a fool. Lovely. Just what I need during my friday night unwinding.

That's just plain rude.

In Oz or anywhere else.

That would be totally unacceptable here as well, in any remotely civilised group.

I suspect his friends are like him.....awful boundaries and social finesse.

He probably HAS been saying you guys are unfriendly dorks, though.

Such is life in a poorly functioning household.

Um, I worry about the drum idea. He might decide it's okay to bring out his didgeridoo (sp?) and join in. Aaaarrrghh!!!

Ack! Can't do drums, or piano for that matter, because the landlady lives downstairs.
