Hi all,
Serious computer woes (which I am still diagnosing and attempting to 'fix') have seriously curtailed my presence online, as well as my clicking. Hope things improve soon. At least I can kinda function again. Wish I could afford to pay a techie to figure things out, but it is just me.
M.A.
Great piece by Bill Moyers, one of my favorite people of all time.

Glad that you are back, safe and sound. Election appears to have turned out very well indeed. Much celebration in the streets. Think that the women voters may have played a key role, but time will tell.
Still unreasonably and unseasonably cold here in eastern North Carolina. Water pipes under the shed burst again, despite insulation.
But, spring is truly right around the corner.

HofT,
The soldiers unit patch can't be seen in the photo. The patch you see is evidently a flag patch. I haven't been able to identify the origin of the flag. It doesn't appear to be a country flag that I am aware of - but, it could be. It may be an individual unit designator. The soldier is evidently an english speaker, re. the GIZMO on his cammo band. He has the appearance of a Britisher - but, that's just an impulsive guess. He is not an American - that can be easily determined by looking at his helmet. Currently, USA soldiers helmets are shaped differently.
Kwick Klick Klub - KKK
Hmmmm. That certainly didn't come out right.......
This is very frustrating. You're right, Dan, that doesn't appear to be a unit patch. But I went through the entire roster of UN member nations and that particular flag doesn't match any of them. I'm not so sure about the helmet. It's hard to make out what the back of it looks like. It might possibly be American although I agree with you that from a frontal view it doesn't appear to be. Or, raher, it looks like the kind of helmet I wore once. And they've been obsolete for quite a number of years now.

Hoft, perhaps the photo was shot by people who dressed like soldiers, and then posted the picture on line.
I received an e mail from a friend with a series of adorable dog pics, and forwarded to Hoft. We have no idea where the photo originated - but it does depict very real events taking place in Iraq.
Plus, there have also been e mails sent to me <via friends> with photos of G.I's sitting with dogs and cats, as well as soldiers attending to wounded children. Very sad.
Sumac, good seeing your posts again! Sending good thoughts for your puters quick recovery.

Yes Merry Andrew, Frustratingly enigmatic, inscrutably mysterious, hard to understand - and, additionally, puzzling and obscure of thought.
I don't think the UN was on board with the Bush. He did form a, uh, ((coalition))....... I have no idea which countries are in the ((coalition)), but, that would be interesting to see what obscure flags are floating in that group. I meant represented - HeHe................

Merry Andrew,
I have found a flag description with the colors like the one in the photo. It is=
((The King's (Liverpool) Regiment
Dark blue with a narrow red central stripe (proportions around 3:2:3)))
That's as close as I have come. I thought it would be a unit flag of probably British origins.
"Sounds good to me" grin

No, the UN wasn't with Bush. But all the allies that are over there helping the US are also UN members -- Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Japan etc. That's why the flag should be among all the other flags. But isn't.

Hi all. Clicked and have been clicking even though I haven't been checking in here for a few days.
Sumac sent me the article you posted MA. Moyers is one of my all time heroes. A threory of mine (one that helps keep me sane) is that this administration and the people in power are a movement that is part of a cycle, like so many others. It will grow in power then die out as most movements do. The horror though is that they will do so much damage while they are in power that much of our country and even our planet will not survive the carnage. Four more years, lots of battles ahead.

There's been an Aa sighting on another thread, y'all. This is all happening in just a couple of days. Do we dare hope . . .?

Do we dare hope? Is spring coming? Hope is sometimes the best that we can hope for. (oops!)
My computer woes, with too many symptoms to list, either hinge on my reassembling the ribbon cables in the innards incorrectly when I had to change out the hard drive, or some other inexplicable problem originating about the same time which gives me the following message on start-up (and at other times): "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. Please inform Microsoft of this problem." I did, repeatedly, with no response.
I am running on XP Professional Edition. I pulled off SP 2 (although I had not encountered any problems with it since downloading it last summer), and reinstalled from disk XP Pro SP 1. With the exception of 4 programs which Setup could not copy from the disk (even after cleaning and polishing the disk): migregdb.ex_,icwconn1.ex_,phone.ic_.filelist.xm_, and reinstalling the entire disk twice.
Could not find anything in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, although a Google search kind of indicated that the app (svchost.exe) could be used by bad guys and perhaps ought to be blocked. But it is a Windows program. ???????
Internet Explorer is screwed and OS is slow. Am about ready to go to Mozilla/Firefox.
Any ideas?

From care2.com:
Groundhog Day derives from the European Candlemas Day, a
Christianized version of the Celtic holiday of Imbolc,
celebrated midway between the Winter Solstice and
Spring Equinox.
During Candlemas, clergy would bless and distribute
candles to their parishioners' homes. The candles would
be lighted and placed in the window. If the sun came out
that day, it meant six more weeks of wintry weather. If
the day was cloudy or rainy it marked moderate weather
until the first day of Spring.
The Germans that settled around Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania
in the 1700's brought the Candelmas tradition with them.
When the groundhog pops his head up after his winter
hibernation, he is the marker for the season. If he sees
his shadow, he gets scared and goes back to sleep for
six weeks, avoiding the bad weather to come. If the day
is cloudy and his shadow is obscured, he exits his den
and Spring is considered to be just around the corner.

Hi, sumac, That's interesting re the Candelmas tradition. Thanks...... Sorry, I can't help you with your computer - there is, as I'm sure you know, a good site right here at A2K to get help with tech stuff. The guys and gals are really helpful. By the way, I have had XP with SP2 for a long time and no problem..... It's a good OS to have. Also, ask your HD mfgr if they have a quick HD checker. I did that with mine a while ago and quickly went to a site to run a check on the HD to see if it had a prob.
All clicked.

"O Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds,
and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me!
I am small and weak, I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and
purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to
hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my
People.
Make me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my
greatest enemy----myself.
Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight
eyes.
So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you
without shame."...amen

sumac,
If only more people could hear and understand those words - the world would surely be a better place.
