Hoft, good seeing you've returned safely.

Leaving isn't a viable solution at this time...if there is a solution, and I'm beginning to seriously doubt America can direct resolution. The abuse continues, animals used for nothing more than dispensable commodities, and we're fighting an endless cause wrought with those ignorant of thier own wrongdoing, but instead focusing on the status quo and ignoring the fact that all life gives meaning.

Godspeed to our troops and allied forces.

Stradee - day in day out also the USMC is getting slaughtered out there. To their eternal credit many Marines have taken in mangy dogs, washed them with flea-and-ticks-killing shampoo, and left them loose in the Green zone where they get fed and petted.

Let's all hope tomorrow's election brings some stability..... and thanks for the kind welcome to you and Dannon. It's really good to be back!

You guys probably won't believe this - but, I joined the USMC in 1960. It was after I got out that I was drafted by the US Army for a paid vacation in the beautiful and tropical Vietnam. GRIN

I have recently met a man in Texarkana, TX who had joined the USMC at 17yrs old and spent the last couple of days in RVN during the - uh, 'charge to the rear' in 1975. He was there the very last day at the gate to the Embassy. Interesting how small the world gets as we age.

Danon - yes, this picture of the last helicopter lifting off the Embassy roof in Saigon haunts millions to this day. As I said, let's hope - and do whatever good we can in the meantime: the sight of these Marines washing out bowls and filling them with clean water for the adopted dogs in Baghdad (even as they themselves are walking targets for assorted lunatic suicide bombers) must be an inspiration to those of us fortunate enough to live in relative safety....

Danon - all western-looking folk have been warned out of the area. Informally, but I'm no hero so I left. I do hope it works out, most of all for the Marines now getting slaughtered, but I'm not optimistic.

The appalling treatment of animals will not abate if we leave - and to their credit lots of Brits, other European, Australians, American, Canadians now on the ground in Iraq have disregarded concerns to personal safety in order to tend to much-abused donkeys (here used as ammo repositories!!!!) dogs and other animals......

Be safe, Helen of Troy, and give my regards & best wishes to those marines and kind-to-animal folks.

I came to say I clicked.

Andrew, Danon, whoever might know: can you identify the unit of the soldier with the dog in Stradee's wonderful picture? When you think how much weight they must already carry in their backpacks while walking long distances he seems even more admirable. That's one happy dog in there!

Piff, did you notice the name printed on the G.I's helmet? Very cute

Merry, the superbowl isn't till next Sunday - preparation for the day is what I was referring to. Course, you'd know that, right? Laughing

Hoft, the doggie couldn't have better human care.

HofT,
The soldiers unit patch can't be seen in the photo. The patch you see is evidently a flag patch. I haven't been able to identify the origin of the flag. It doesn't appear to be a country flag that I am aware of - but, it could be. It may be an individual unit designator. The soldier is evidently an english speaker, re. the GIZMO on his cammo band. He has the appearance of a Britisher - but, that's just an impulsive guess. He is not an American - that can be easily determined by looking at his helmet. Currently, USA soldiers helmets are shaped differently.

Hmmmm. That certainly didn't come out right.......
