hmmm, Club Quarters is some kind of members only thing.
Back on the search.
There's another thread going on with smorgs asking re a hotel for her daughter to stay in, was the one she picked ok, and the respondents said yes it was. It was in the $100-200. range, forget the number. I'll give you a link when I run across the thread.
Quote:p@@p on NYC
$400 - $700/night
pfffffffft
I am not impressed.
Check out the Pickwick Arms. The rooms are extremely small and no cable or internet. Lots of Europeans stay in this hotel in mid-town. It's only a couple of blocks from the Waldorf, so I know about it because lots of APsaA members have stayed there. The rooms start at $80.00 a night, if you're willing to walk down the hall for the bathrooms (lavatory in room.) Rooms with private baths or shared baths (between two rooms) are somewhere near $100.00 a night. The neighborhood is ideal and very safe. Close to Subway (within a block). It's not bad for an economical stay. The atmosphere is very nice. And there is an internet connection in the lobby.
But actually, there are lots of places to stay other than those hotels that fit into that price range. The Waldorf's top dollar single room is $400.00 and sometimes they run special rates.

So where the f*ck is this picture then?
Thanks Lola and ossoB. I'd definitely like to be able to stay more than 1 night - and be able to do something while I'm there. Travelocity's rates were scaring me bigtime.
I didn't want to report back that "yeah I went, but I couldn't afford to leave the room". I wasn't expecting to do NYC on $5 a day, but really ...
I'm going to follow up on those leads (and thanks to mac as well).
When I stayed at the notsofun YMCA, a woman and her husband I talked with at the Whitney told me about another hotel in the immediate area, Broadway by Lincoln Center, I'd guess at 62rd street, named the Empire; she said it was inexpensive and def better than the Y, on 63rd.
I never went in to check it out, but if it comes up on one of your lists, it's probably not horrible.
I remember about a year ago, Semiotterly mentioned a pretty fair hotel, for less than I paid at the Y (96, I think, to get my own miserable bathroom).
Also, Piffka stayed in NY a couple of years ago now, she might have a comment.
Aha, I remember another name, the Almont - a psychologist friend from Minneapolis told me it was her favorite, sort of a boutique small hotel.
Well, Pickwick Arms is available when I need it AND I can afford a private bathroom there ($89 with bath). Probably the smallest lobby in a hotel I've seen in a long time
, but I wasn't planning to spend much time in the lobby (or the room itself).
I've got a couple more work things to sort out before I book, but I'm feeling a lot more optimistic now.
Thank you Thank you Thank you
There's also a good suites hotel, well two of them which are in the $200.00 range. They're on the Upper West Side and also very close to an express stop subway. One is on Broadway and the other is two blocks away on 76th. They have small kitchens in the suite. So that makes it more economical still. It helps if you don't have to eat every single meal out. Both hotels are good, but The Beacon (on Broadway) is the best. The other one is the Milburn. Try the Beacon first.

Here's a tip, Beth. For only a little bit more a night, definitely book one of the rooms with a private bath. The rooms are bigger and more well located. If you like, I can ask to see the room type you've booked and let you know. I'm down in the part of the town frequently....actually I'll be there a good part of week after next. It may be best if I do this, because I know one person who stayed there in a room with a bath down the hallway and, while not bad, was much less nice than other rooms I'd seen there.
Thanks Lola. You're being enormously helpful. Will look at more of your suggestions tonight.
I soooooo need this break.
We'll give you a group footrub.
Oooh, Lola, that IS good info - 89 for a night is better than you can get in mainstream hotels in Boston.
All this talk of hotels and the related expense is a bit puzzling to me. Are people so opposed to sleeping under bridges that it is no longer an option?
And, this is no sh-t, Mrs. Nation and I have two fold-out loveseats which are in use for a variety of passersbys, I don't see any reason we couldn't flop one open for some creature in need. Just ask.

Well, it's like this, I'm want to use my brothers digital camera, but it needs to be charged and he can't locate the adapter/charger thingy, so, I'll have to do it tomorrow.
I'm going to be holding my guinea pig in the pic, she's so cute, we look alike.
So you look like your guinea pig, yeah, I'm pretty sure I've dated you.

I said I LOOK like her, not ACT, you big silly!
Some people do look like their pets, I think I'm one of them.
Another hotel tip: hotwire.com is pretty good, you pick the area you want to stay, and it lists the price, the general area the hotel is in, the rating(stars), but the catch is you don't know what the exact hotel is until it's paid for. I think priceline.com does the same thing.
I got a 4 star hotel in downtown Boston one night for around $90, it was pretty sweet.
Of course, you could get a great price at a hotel in a shitty area too.
