Came across this piece of early propaganda. Hard to believe people took it seriously.

@Olivier5,
I’m sure you’ve warned people about their Trump hate... You’re just being silly.

@izzythepush,
There was a whole thread about this stuff and how the same arguments used against suffragettes are being used today.

@engineer,
Just came across it while looking for something else. And yes you're right a lot of the charges being made against suffragettes are now being used against feminists, chief being that they're just a bunch of ugly manhaters.

@izzythepush,
Do you remember the thread? I've wanted to go back to it a few times but never had enough energy to hunt it down.

@engineer,
It rings a vague bell, but that's about as far as it goes. Tracking down old posts can be exhausting. I once spent three fruitless hours looking for something. It did my bloody head in.

That's a tad superficial. In all fairness, it's not the case with the cartoon you posted upthread, whose argument is that if they can vote, women will manage to force men to marry them... Not sure why that was a concern exactly, but that's what the cartoon says. So this one doesn't paint them as man haters at all.

Men will **** up the MeToo movement before it can succeed, in my opinion.

@Olivier5,
I had a look at a couple of sites devoted to these postcards. The general theme seems to be the inversion of gender roles that were very stark in this era: weak men being carried by strong women, being forced to marry by women (certainly the opposite was often the case); men caring for children while their wives drink, smoke, read the paper and play cards, or demonstrate... This is not a frequent theme today at all. Things have changed quite a bit.

fear and hatred of strong women - always a powerful theme - still an issue

@ehBeth,
It may be a factor in petto but I haven't seen it used as an explicit argument against MeToo.

@Olivier5,
That's more than a little stupid. Try reading my post, I gave a brief précis of what I'd seen. I wasn't going to start posting hundreds of pictures so everyone could see what I'd just seen. What I said is true, and although the postcard I posted wasn't about ugly man haters a lot were, like this one.

@Olivier5,
The theme that feminism in not about equal rights but about women subjugating men is basically unchanged from what you hear today.

@engineer,
That's a fair point, thanks. Striking indeed that these postcards basically ask (to men, who would be the ones voting for or against woman suffrage): Do you want to remain the boss of your wife, or do you want your wife to boss you around? The idea of gender equality as an alternative is completely ignored.

Edit: And yes, that false dichotomy is still being peddled, with the related (false) idea that a feminist man is necessarily a "feminine man", a "girly man", ie weak and submissive.

How raising the minimum wage and applying it to all could reduce sexual assault on poor women, who are the most frequent victims:
