Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, Howard Hawks.

I can only think of Scorsese for not getting anything from the Academy, yet. I think the others won for Director or Picture, except Hitchcock who got some kind of apology award, maybe the Thalberg.

Unbelievably Coppola is the only one of them to win the best director Oscar (so far)

Wow thanks. I thought Hawks won for sure. I wonder if Kubrick ever got anything from the academy? Don't remember him ever getting an honorary award.

Hiama: I'll guess that the director with the most nominations without a win is Alfred Hitchcock. I don't think he ever got an Oscar.

Reaggedy -you were very close:-

It was actually Clarence Brown who has 6 nominations and never won. A three way tie for second place exists between King Vidor, Alfred Hitchcock (who was eventually given an honorary award) and Robert Altman.

Ah, but not close enough Hiama. No million dollars for me. Crying or Very sad

Do you know the names of the two directors who won back-to-back Oscars, one in the 40s; one in the 50s?

Give me a few minutes first. Let me think. Did you mean one director in the 40s got consecutive oscars, and one in the 50s - or both of them got their first in the 40s and the second one in the 50s.

I thought that question was awkwardly phrased when I typed it. Laughing Thanks for rewording it for me. One director in the 40s got consecutive Oscars and one in the 50's got consecutive Oscars.

Oh, good grief. I made a mistake. After you answer this one you may throw me out of the game. I deserve it. Embarrassed One director got consecutive Oscars in the 40s and, as I just discovered, the other director got his consecutive Oscars in the 40s and 50s. That certainly narrows the second part of the question down, doesn't it?

I'll guess out of the blue again and say John Huston and Billy Wilder.

Yes to John Ford and Joseph L. Mankiewicz. My hint for John Ford would have been that he filmed nine of his movies in Monument Valley.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Hiama. Smile

What four actors have each been nominated twice for playing the same character in two different movies?

Great question, Hiama.
I'll guess :

Bing Crosby for Going My Way and Bells of St. Marys (Father O'Malley)
Paul Newman for The Hustler and The Color of Money (Fast Eddie)
Al Pacino for The Godfather and Godfather II ( Michael)

I'm thinking the fourth one might be an actress.
