Libertarian Purity Test

Reply Wed 13 Oct, 2004 05:51 am
I have, for a long time, considered myself a libertarian. Found this test on the internet. No, it is not terribly scientific, and I do detect a bias, but it IS fun, anyhow.

http://www.bcaplan.com/cgi/purity.cgi

I got a score of 68.

Quote:
51-90 points: You are a medium-core libertarian, probably self-consciously so. Your friends probably encourage you to quit talking about your views so much.

That sounds about right! Laughing

It might also explain about why I am in such a funk about the election.

Where do you score on this test?

Pretty black and white questions.

16-30 points: You are a soft-core libertarian. With effort, you may harden and become pure Razz

Larry434-What I found troubling, was the either/or aspect of the test, not allowing for contingencies, troubling. For instance there was one question:

Quote:
Should we abolish welfare?

I believe that the government needs to provide a safety net to help people who are caught in a serious situation, not of their fault, or doing, for a temporary period of time. Also, I believe that the very small numbers of people that are truly disabled, cannot be left on the wayside. Otherwise, I believe that welfare, as we know it now, needs to be abolished.

I scored a 76. I thought I was more of a libertarian than that. A problem of a test like this is that an honest answer requires that everything happens simultaneously. I woulds like to see government completely out of all aspects of helping individuals; however this shouldn't happen until private organizations and individuals are ready to take up the slack; and this can't happen until taxation is greatly reduced.

I scored 31:

Many of the questions were indeed frustrating giving only all or nothing options. I voted no on many issues that I would have voted yes with a qualifier.

ebrown_p - Whether or not the questions seem extreme, IMO, depends on where you stand on the issues. It is true, as I have said, that many of the questions were couched in all or nothing terms, which I believe is a deficiency in the basic makeup of the questionnaire.

There are many political "givens" that most people take for granted, that I, and I would assume many other people, consider extreme.
