Apropo of nothing, I had a thread on the french election that went nowhere, not least since I didn't post there much myself. I mention this because Melancron and his associates had me worried, re some of their proposals.

I figure Le Pen won't disappear, but neither will he...

A fair number of Canadians, on the other hand, are not content with being Canadian in a very nice place to live. They feel they need to denigrate their Big Cousin to the South.

Look at the graph. Look at the time where the change occurred. This is coincident with the beginning of Reagan's presidency, a presidency which forwarded and empowered the religious right in the US. At that time, the early 80s, attention on Islam was negligible outside of Iran. The Taliban held no place in our discourse because it didn't exist until a decade or so later. There was nothing in western discourse in the early eighties re a caliphate until, again, the nineties.
