AP reports
Quote:
On April 6, Ivanka Trump’s company won provisional approval from the Chinese government for three new trademarks, giving it monopoly rights to sell Ivanka brand jewelry, bags and spa services in the world’s second-largest economy. That night, the first daughter and her husband, Jared Kushner, sat next to the president of China and his wife for a steak and Dover sole dinner at Mar-a-Lago.

The scenario underscores how difficult it is for Trump, who has tried to distance herself from the brand that bears her name, to separate business from politics in her new position at the White House.
AP
And Greg Sargent asks...
Quote:
This implies she wants to “separate business from politics.” Does the conduct of the Trump family suggest thus far that this is what they want?

Sarah Posner has a good piece on Ivanka Trump
Quote:
...But the focus on this aspect of Ivanka Trump’s role dangerously obscures something else that is at least as important about her: her conduct inside the White House is vexed by the same controversial conflicts of interest plaguing the president himself. And in some ways, she is just as culpable as he in pushing this White House into unprecedented ethical territory.

Like her father, Ivanka Trump has not fully divested herself from her family business — in her case, a fashion and jewelry company valued at more than $50 million. And so, she stands to profit from the unique contacts and access her White House role provides. From the moment she set foot in the White House, her vaguely-defined but expansive role as the president’s “eyes and ears” has created an unprecedented new “advisor” position for the self-styled businesswoman — and with it, unprecedented openings for conflicts of interest.

Good grief in heaven. A few days ago, georgeob accused me of not knowing the series of the last three leaders of North Korea. And, yeah, of course I've been well aware of this (even while, for example, Sarah Palin didn't know there were two Koreas). And now this...
Quote:
Trump responded by saying he doesn’t “want to telegraph” what he’s “doing or thinking,” [about North Korea] but went on to suggest the time for talk is over.
“They’ve been talking with this gentleman for a long time,” Trump said, apparently referencing former American presidents’ negotiations with North Korea. “You read Clinton’s book, he said, ‘Oh, we made such a great peace deal,’ and it was a joke.”

@blatham,
Father and son, 2 sides of the same coin. Unless you think Jr's actions have been so much different than his dads were. The other question remains, if Clinton hadn't made that stupid deal with NK, would we be facing a nuke armed NK today? This will be important in a few years when we are dealing with Iran and another failed nuke deal.

That, sir, is unadulterated bullshit. I don't blame you personally for spreading such garbage but you might want to read your favorite sources of news
a bit more critically.

What's particularly alarming about man-made climate change is the rate at which it's happening:
Quote:
Not only is the planet undergoing one of the largest climate changes in the past 65 million years, Stanford climate scientists Noah Diffenbaugh and Chris Field report that it's on pace to occur at a rate 10 times faster than any change in that period. Without intervention, this extreme pace could lead to a 5-6 degree Celsius spike in annual temperatures by the end of the century.

Plenty more studies out there which back this up.

It remains to be seen if the Iran deal will fail.

If it does fail, and Iran follows in North Korea's footsteps, then the world will smack them with harsh sanctions just like they did with North Korea.

I don't think Clinton's deal made any difference. North Korea would have proceeded with their illegal nuclear program deal or no deal.

@hightor,
Quote:
From 1989 onwards industry funded organisations including the Global Climate Coalition and the George C. Marshall Institute sought to spread doubt among the public, in a strategy already developed by the tobacco industry.[65][66][67] A small group of scientists opposed to the consensus on global warming became politically involved, and with support from conservative political interests, began publishing in books and the press rather than in scientific journals.[68] This small group of scientists included some of the same people that were part of the strategy already tried by the tobacco industry.[69] Spencer Weart identifies this period as the point where legitimate skepticism about basic aspects of climate science was no longer justified, and those spreading mistrust about these issues became deniers.[70] As their arguments were increasingly refuted by the scientific community and new data, deniers turned to political arguments, making personal attacks on the reputation of scientists, and promoting ideas of a global warming conspiracy.[71]
Wikipedia Much, much more at link. For those who give a damn about reality.

Carrier strike group wasn't headed to Korean Peninsula, despite Trump's saber-rattling

An aircraft carrier strike group that the Trump administration had said was headed toward North Korea in a powerful show of force has instead spent the past week thousands of miles away - and heading in the opposite direction.

Jesus. So the WH cancels the long-planned and promoted Paris Accord meeting to resolve "long-simmering tensions" within the party and administration on the matter. Why? Because suddenly he has to go to Wisconsin to talk about jobs.

How about a more credible explanation. Bring down the media focus on this meeting and the relevant issues because they aren't going to behave as Trump had previously promised while campaigning. That's a prediction and we'll soon know whether I get it right here.

Yup. And though I can't cite evidence here, it's possible they were actually headed to Mar a Lago and a supply of delicious Ukrainian prostitutes hand-picked by Putin and provided through the support services of Fat Leonard.

@Baldimo,
Baldimo, what is it about "global" that you fail to understand? Climate affects everyone — every living thing — on the planet. There's no reason that countries can't work together to achieve the necessary reductions in carbon emissions independent of establishing worldwide "socialism". Sometimes countries have to cooperate with each other. Why such hostility to international treaties?

Winner of our very prestigious and highly sought-after "Now there is a dipshit Republican!" contest for the week.
Quote:
The “controversy” surrounding President Obama’s birth certificate was fueled by racist conspiracy theories which Donald Trump personally propelled. The ongoing concern about Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns, by contrast, is fueled by legitimate concerns that Trump’s presidency is compromised—perhaps dangerously so—by conflicts of interest pertaining to international affairs, domestic tax reform, and other issues.
The two aren’t equivalent. But during a town hall on Monday, Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA) tried to make them so.

In February, Denham joined 228 other House Republicans to vote down a Democratic effort to force Trump to release his returns. When the topic came up during the town hall in Denair, Denham replied by saying he’s “not going to ask the previous president that I served under to show his birth certificate any more than I would ask this president to show his taxes.”

Just for starters:

ocean acidification
bleaching and death of coral
movement of tropical species into temperate zones
melting Siberian permafrost
browning of boreal forest
sea level rise
melting glaciers

My understanding is that it is sailing there. It just isn't scheduled to arrive for a couple more weeks.

But it is clearly just a show of force regardless. When the nukes rain down on North Korea, they'll come from a sub, not from an aircraft carrier.

The latest from Gabe Sherman on O'Reilly and Fox
Quote:
With only six days remaining in Bill O’Reilly’s vacation, the pressure on the Murdoch family to decide the embattled commentator’s fate is intensifying. Three sources with knowledge of the discussions said that, while no final decision has been made, the Murdochs are leaning toward announcing that O’Reilly will not return to the air. Sons James and Lachlan have been arguing that O’Reilly needs to go, say these sources, though their father, Rupert, has resisted that outcome.

The prospect of dumping O’Reilly — once unimaginable — has gained steam this week due in part to street protests outside Fox News headquarters and advertiser boycotts on O’Reilly’s air. One network insider said Fox executives are alarmed by the severity of the ad-revenue decline. “It’s worse than Glenn Beck,” the insider said, referring to the advertiser revolt that helped derail Beck’s Fox News career in 2011.

Another factor: the Murdochs’ pending $14 billion takeover of European pay-TV provider Sky. On May 16, the British media regulator Ofcom is set to judge whether the Murdochs are “fit and proper” to own such a large media property. Removing O’Reilly could appease critics and help close the Sky deal. (In 2011, the Murdochs abandoned their initial takeover offer for Sky after the London phone-hacking scandal.)

Meanwhile, the Murdochs are also dealing with a restive workplace...
NYMag
Sherman has been probably the best reporter on Murdoch world. So we'll have to see if he gets it right here. The point made about Sky is critical. Murdoch was trying to get this when the News of the World hacking scandal broke and Murdoch's criminal enterprise was revealed. If he manages now to get Sky, you'll have your indicator that his corruption of Brit politics remains in place.

You assume that I believe CC/GW, whatever they want to call it, is man made. I don't think it is.

Quote:

That's just it in a nut shell. CC/GW isn't man made and nothing we do will change the climate. What the CC/GW crowd wants to do is make our climate static and when they fail to do that, it will mean more and more doubling down to achieve something that isn't possible. The only way these people will get their way is with global control of the planet.

Quote:

Sure sometimes we cooperate with each other, but handing over control of the US to the UN is out of the question, I would prefer to hold onto our sovereignty. I'm sorry to say but the steps the UN wants to take to battle CC/GW is going to lead to the end of your independent country.

Too bad we won't be around at the end if the century to see that this prediction is as full of **** as all the others that didn't come true. I've read enough science to convince me it's all hysterics. All the predictions are based on computer models. If the can't predict the weather 2 months from now with only about 60/40 accuracy I'm not buying this 100 years from now crap.
