Coronavirus updates: Surgeon General pleads with Americans to wear face masks

Quote:
Over 14.5 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some governments are hiding or downplaying the scope of their nations' outbreaks.

The United States has become the worst-affected country, with more than 3.7 million diagnosed cases and at least 140,534 deaths.

8:25 a.m.: Surgeon General pleads with Americans to wear face masks

During an interview on "Fox and Friends" Surgeon General Jerome Adams pleaded with Americans to wear face masks and cited their benefits, despite previous vocal doubts from the president.

Adams told the hosts Trump and the administration are on the same page and the most effective way to reopen the country safely was for every person to wear a mask voluntarily.

"I'm pleading with your viewers, I'm begging you, please understand that we are not trying to take away your freedoms when we say wear a face covering," he said. "We are saying if we do these things, we can actually open and stay open."

On Sunday, during his interview with Fox News's Chris Wallace, Trump said he's a believer masks but also "masks cause problems too," and said there would be no national mandate for masks. He also took issue with CDC Director Robert Redfield's statement that if everyone wore a face masks over the next four to six weeks, "we could drive this epidemic to the ground."

“I don’t agree with the statement that if everybody wear a mask everything disappears,” Trump said during the interview.

Trump also criticized Adams during the interview for earlier statements against a mask use. The surgeon general admitted he and his team were wrong during the beginning of the pandemic.

"Once we realized that the science was different for this virus, we changed our recommendations," Adams said.

Adams argued against a federal mask mandate citing concerns over enforcement.

"I would rather help people understand why they should cooperate with wearing a mask and how they benefit from it versus simply saying we are going to force you to do it particularly sending in federal troops and using federal mechanism," he said.

3:55 a.m.: France makes wearing a mask indoors mandatory
France is taking a new step in the fight against the spread of the new coronavirus making the wearing of the mask mandatory in closed public spaces from today.

The Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, said on Saturday that the obligation to wear a mask would apply in shops, "establishments open to the public", "covered markets" or even banks.

Wearing a mask on the street, in parks, at sea, on hiking trails or at the beach is not included in the new legislation.

The fine for non-compliance will be 135 Euros ($154 U.S.).

2:10 a.m.: 85 members of shipping vessel in Alaska test positive for COVID-19
At least 85 crew members on an American Seafoods ship have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the company.

A factory trawler called The American Triumph departed Oregon on June 27 with 119 crew members on board to make their way to Alaska to fish for pollock but two weeks after the ship departed seven members of the crew reported that they were suffering from symptoms potentially associated with COVID-19.

The seven crew members were tested in Unalaska and six out of the seven of them were tested positive for the virus.

All crew members were then tested and a total of 79 more workers were found to have tested positive bringing the total to 85 crew members out of the 119 onboard the American Triumph, according to a statement by the city.

American Seafoods spokeswoman Suzanne Lugoni said that none of the crew showed COVID-19 symptoms before boarding and that the company screened employees before the fishing expedition began.

“We are moving expeditiously to relocate our crew and get them the care they need,” said American Seafoods CEO Mikel Durham. “I want to thank the Illiuliuk Family and Health Services, the City of Unalaska Unified Command, and the public health and critical infrastructure professionals in Alaska who provided us with support and clear guidance.”

Meanwhile, Alaska had 119 new cases of COVID-19 reported on Sunday -- a new record for the state.

All of the crew members will now be moved to Anchorage where they will isolate.

“Our priority is supporting our crew members and protecting the community. I am deeply grateful for the entire Alaska community for working with us to get our crew the care they need," said Durham.

@revelette1,
Revelette,

That article is essentially saying that this administrations response to the pandemic is incoherent at best...and counterproductive at worst.

This administration's handling of this situation is catastrophic.

If there is a Hell...Trump should roast in it for what he has done to our nation and its institutions...but they should build a special place in Hell for him to pay for what he has done with regard to the pandemic.

@Frank Apisa,
As bad as Trump is as a leader during this crises in our country, his use of federal agents towards US citizens is really alarming.

Trump signals he will send federal agents to major cities

Is this allowed? What country are we becoming? Why isn't there an outcry? It is like he is going to send federal agents to all democratic run states. It's shameful and scary.

Exploring 'The Hill' today. Here is another really good piece. I was watching a segment of the Late John Lewis where he was talking about "you got to be on the right side of history" while reading the article. I thought how appropriate.

Juan Williams: We must not become numb to Trump's abnormality

Republican senators and Trump supporters are not going to be on the right side of history for their support of such a disastrously despot of a man.

Why? Because a couple of liars like you and Ollie say so. I don't think your unproven opinion holds much water here or anywhere else.

Some black writers are also fervent racists who argue that there is no room for racial equality, They also hate the Jews.

@goldberg,
The New York Times has been taken over by such chin-jutting black racists, becoming the Black Times. That's not the role BLM is supposed to play.

Now it's just a circus-like show featuring far-right, far-left and black racists. Rosa Parks would have scoffed at such performers pretending to care about black people and their rights.

The '1619 Project's creator Nikole Hannah-Jones is no match to Rosa Parks . Nikole Hannah-Jones is an instigator.

@RABEL222,
Let's face it. Biden just wants to win the black vote. He doesn't care about black people just like Trump. Sorry for being such up-front.

Black people and non-black people are equal.

Even Fox News reported that Trump's stooges have met Putin's lickspittles in private in the past; that's why Trump fired James Comey and still resents Jeff Sessions. Which is to say their links to Russia cannot be gainsaid.

@goldberg,

Two journalists, from The Washington Post and CNN, agree with Jemele Hill's claim that Trump voters are 'racist'
'You have no wiggle room,' she said

By Joseph A. Wulfsohn

The Atlantic staff writer Jemele Hill stirred up controversy on social media after declaring that anyone who votes for President Trump is a "racist."

Hill has been a longtime critic of the president, who she previously called a "white supremacist." Her outspokenness prompted her 2018 exit from ESPN as a host.

Now, Hill is taking aim at his supporters.

"If you vote for Donald Trump, you are a racist. You have no wiggle room," Hill tweeted on Sunday.

Hill faced a backlash from some parts of Twitter.

"You’re going to think white conservatives are racist whether they vote for Donald Trump or not. Thankfully, they’re not wondering what you think," conservative podcast host Allie Beth Stuckey reacted.

"Anyone who believes this drivel is a BIGOT. No wiggle room," actor Dean Cain wrote.

"We won’t be intimidated by your bigotry. Casting generalized judgment upon a vast group of people, without regard to real evidence or the actual character of individuals, is pure prejudice. Hence, you’re a bigot @jemelehill," pro-Trump PAC America First spokesman Steve Cortes similarly tweeted.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, invoked former Vice President Joe Biden's "you ain't black" remark in a sarcastic tweet correcting Hill.

"No, no, it’s 'you’re not black.' Gotta get Biden’s racist, condescending talking points right...." Cruz said.

Outkick founder and sports journalist Clay Travis, who previously called for Hill to be fired when she was still a host on ESPN, took aim at the Disney-owned sports network, which is collaborating with Hill on a docuseries about former NFL player Colin Kaepernick.

"ESPN is paying Jemele Hill millions of dollars to produce a Colin Kaepernick documentary to air on @espn. Yet they’ve been silent since she called all @realDonaldTrump voters racist. There’s only one conclusion to draw. ESPN agrees with her," Travis accused the sports network.

Others mocked the Atlantic staff writer with a 2017 tweet in which Hill admitted that her mother voted for Trump and had been voting Republican since 2000.

However, The Washington Post's Global Opinions Editor Karen Attiah expressed solidarity with Hill.

"Voting for Trump is a choice to aid and abet racism and white supremacy," Attiah wrote. "And yes, some minorities can (and do) reinforce systemic white supremacy."

She added, "Anyway. @jemelehill is the truth."

WASHINGTON POST EDITOR SAYS TEXAS RANGERS NAME 'MUST GO,' GETS SLAMMED BY CRITICS

CNN's Keith Boykin also defended Hill from her critics and sided with her statement.

"If you're mad at Jemele Hill for calling you a racist but you're not mad at Donald Trump for actually being a racist, then you just prove her point that Trump supporters are racists," Boykin tweeted.

Hill told her Twitter followers last week that she will be working on Kaepernick's multi-platform deal with Disney, calling it an "honor to play any role in telling Colin’s story."

"I have always known Colin is on the right side of history and this is an opportunity to make sure history continues to always reflects that," the Atlantic staff writer tweeted. "Colin’s vision for this collaboration isn’t just about content, but empowerment. He was adamant that his work be surrounded by black and brown voices. It also was important for me to use my influence to elevate these voices, particularly inside of ESPN. I am truly grateful."

Karen Attiah is also black.

@goldberg,
I'd venture to say that lots of non-black voters would be delighted to vote for Trump instead of Biden simply because they are narked by such unwitting remarks tossed out by such soft-headed black journalists.

Just keep making such toe-curling comments if such far-left black racists want to help Trump get elected.

Biden would be well advised to stay away from such far-left sorts and cleave to his centrist roots.

To be upset about enforcing our laws is plain ignorant.
