@hightor,
As an aside:
In Gelsenkirchen (Germany) a statue of Lenin will be unveiled in front of the headquarters of the left-wing extremist party MLPD ("Marxist-Leninist Party Germany"), which has been causing controversy for quite some time.

The city had unsuccessfully tried to prevent the monument from being erected (The city of Gelsenkirchen had imposed a construction stop, but then lost before the Higher Administrative Court).

Now they are reacting with an exhibition on the history of communism.
On Friday the exhibition "Communism in its Age" will start in the Horst Castle directly opposite the party's headquarters. The city wants to enlighten about communism and to work on its ideology.

The statue was cast in 1957 in what was then Czechoslovakia and then "banned" at some point after 1990.

In your case what you want should have us tearing down mosques also.

Do you really see no difference between tearing down a house of worship funded by members of a particular religion and removing a statue of a racist situated in a public square?

Actually I'd have no problem, personally, with mosques, churches, synagogues, and temples being torn down or converted into low-income housing, beer gardens, or used car lots. I'd volunteer to help. But we have this thing called the "Bill of Rights" — ever hear of it?

@Frank Apisa,
Yeah, heard it on NPR earlier.

Those are the lyrics to Pink Floyd's "Vera." That's how I came to know about Vera Lynn.

Trump was told meaning of Juneteenth by black Secret Service agent
Quote:
Trump told the WSJ that neither he nor any of his staff seemed to know the meaning of the holiday before furor over Tulsa rally
[...]
Juneteenth celebrates the anniversary of the day in 1865 when an army general read out Abraham Lincoln’s emancipation proclamation in Texas, freeing slaves in a portion of the last un-emancipated state.

But Trump told the Wall Street Journal that neither he nor any of his staff seemed to know the meaning of the holiday before the furor over the Tulsa rally.

“Trump said a black Secret Service agent told him the meaning of Juneteenth as the president was facing criticism for initially planning to hold his first campaign rally in three months on the day,” the paper reported in a lengthy interview with the president.

That lack of knowledge did not stop Trump claiming that his Tulsa rally had greatly helped popularize the holiday – which is already commemorated or observed by 47 states and the District of Columbia.

“I did something good: I made Juneteenth very famous,” Mr. Trump told the newspaper. “It’s actually an important event, an important time. But nobody had ever heard of it,” Trump claimed.

The Journal reported that Trump said he had asked many people around him about the holiday and none of them had heard of Juneteenth. He then “paused the interview to ask an aide if she had heard of Juneteenth, and she pointed out that the White House had issued a statement last year commemorating the day”, the paper reported.

Trump responded: “Oh really? We put out a statement? The Trump White House put out a statement? Ok, ok. Good.”

@InfraBlue,
If you’d grown up in the UK you’d know who she was. She was the leading pin up for British forces, she famously went to Burma because that was where no entertainers went.

Pretty much every event regarding the war involved some mention of Vera Lynn. Britain has based most of its culture on winning WW2 and ridding the World of Nazis, conveniently ignoring earlier events. There’s a lot of remembering of events and anniversaries associated with WW2, not to mention documentaries, and Vera normally gets a nod in those.

When the queen addressed the nation recently she quoted Vera Lynn.

@InfraBlue,
The only other wartime singer was Gracie Fields. And for the life of me I can’t see why, she had an awful voice, shrill and harsh that puts your teeth on edge.

The Atlanta Police Arrest is a Political Stunt

Quote:
Two weeks ago, two black police officers smashed the windows of a vehicle and tasered the black college students in the vehicle. The students did not obey orders to stop during the Atlanta protests that had turned violent. The Mayor of Atlanta fired the officers and Paul Howard charged them on the grounds that they had discharged “deadly weapons.” I intentionally mention the races of the parties involved because one of the allegations made against the officers is that they participated in white supremacy culture.

A taser was a deadly weapon then, what happened?
Quote:
Yesterday, in indicting Officer Rolfe, Howard claimed a taser was not a deadly weapon and Officer Rolfe should, therefore, not have fired his weapon after Brooks tried to shoot Rolfe with the taser.

Additionally, at the press conference, Howard claimed Rolfe’s partner, Officer Bosnan, would plead guilty and be a witness for the prosecution against Rolfe. Bosnan’s lawyer denies all of that. Bosnan’s lawyer says there will be no guilty plea and no cooperation with the state.

As a result of Howard’s actions, overnight members of Atlanta’s police department began abandoning their posts. It was not an organized walkout across the department, but in various precincts of the city the police stopped responding to calls or did not show up for their shifts.

Howard’s actions are political grandstanding on the backs of these police officers.

@coldjoint,
Slavery existed in the fertile crescent, Greece, and rome well before that. It was widespread in early "white" political systems for centuries before Islam and before Southerners and European imperialists made it the bases of their exploitation of people and land.

It's shameful, not an excuse to memorialize.

Your anti-South bigotry is shameful.

And your failure to address my rebuttal of your falsehoods about Israel shows that you know full well that what you said about Israel isn't true.
