A corrections officer who participated in a counterprotest to a Black Lives Matter demonstration in New Jersey in which people re-enacted the death of George Floyd was suspended after the video was widely shared on social media.

In the video, protesters march along a street Monday in Franklin Township, Gloucester county, chanting George Floyd! and Black Lives Matter! The video shows they are being escorted by local police.

They pass a private property filled with firewood for sale. Video filmed by someone marching shows a man kneeling on the neck of another man shouting unintelligibly back at protesters. Protesters shout back.

Two more men are standing nearby and one of them is filming on a cellphone. The group is standing on the roadside in front of a pickup truck outfitted with an American flag and a Trump banner. Several others are nearby. An All Lives Matter sign is also hanging.

Another truck shows the thin blue line flag, meant to show support for law enforcement workers.

A statement from Police Chief Brian Zimmer and Mayor John Bruno said they were appalled and saddened by the revolting actions of certain individuals.

Governor Phil Murphy condemned the stunt Tuesday night on Twitter, saying the state won’t let the actions of a few distract from our progress toward dismantling systemic racism.

Mocking George Floyds murder in effort to belittle the calls for justice from our Black and Brown communities is repugnant, Murphy tweeted.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has claimed that his recommendation to fire an inspector general who was investigating him couldn’t possibly have been retaliatory, because he did not even know about the investigation.

But newly revealed testimony from the inspector general, Steve Linick, casts more serious doubt on that already dubious claim.

“As to that review, I never spoke with the Secretary directly about it,” Linick said, according to a transcript of his private testimony released Wednesday morning. “There was a point in time in late 2019 that my office reached out to get documents from the office of the secretary as well as the office of the legal adviser. And during that same period of time, I did speak with Undersecretary [Brian] Bulatao, possibly Deputy Secretary [John] Sullivan — but I am not sure — about the reasons — about the fact that we were making these document requests so they weren’t surprised.”

Linick said that he also told Deputy Secretary Steve Biegun about the probe and that his staff also “reached out to Lisa Kenna,” the State Department’s executive secretary.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Wednesday defended President Donald Trump’s promotion of an unsubstantiated conspiracy theory about a 75-year-old protester injured by police in Buffalo, saying it was Trump’s “prerogative” to raise questions about the incident.

The protester, Martin Gugino, was shoved by police and critically injured when he approached them during a march against racism and police brutality in an incident that was captured on video and led to criminal charges against the officers involved. It was one of many protests after George Floyd, a black man, died on May 25 in Minneapolis after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Trump, offering no evidence, tweeted on Tuesday that Gugino’s fall could be a “set up” with ties to the anti-fascist movement antifa. Trump and other Republicans have sought to blame violence that has flared at some protests on antifa despite little evidence.

Regarding Gugino, the Republican president cited a report by pro-Trump channel One America News Network, which also offered no evidence. The OANN piece was narrated by a Russian native who has worked for the Kremlin-controlled Sputnik news outlet, according to the Daily Beast and the New York Times.

“The president was just raising some questions, some legitimate ones, about that particular interaction. And it’s his prerogative to do so,” White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany told Fox News on Wednesday.

Democrats and other critics have blasted Trump’s tweet and urged the president to apologize, while numerous Republicans in Congress and Trump’s chief of Staff Mark Meadows declined to comment, according to media reports.

A lawyer for Gugino called Trump’s statement “dark, dangerous, and untrue,” according to media reports. Gugino told USA TODAY he had “no comment other than Black Lives Matter” and that he has been released from intensive care and “should recover eventually.”

Buffalo Police Officers Aaron Torgalski, 39, and Robert McCabe, 32, face felony assault charges over the incident.

In a statement Tuesday to the Washington Post, Zarcone called Trump's tweet “a dark, dangerous and untrue accusation.”

“Martin has always been a PEACEFUL protester because he cares about today’s society," Zarcone said.

"He is also a typical Western New Yorker who loves his family. No one from law enforcement has suggested otherwise so we’re at a loss to understand why the president of the United States would make such a dark, dangerous and untrue accusation against him.”
