I think it is unlikely, Bill. If it were to happen, I think it would only be under circumstances more dire and chaotic than we see now. Greater increases in income disparity would move things in that direction, I think, but that alone seems insufficient. A significant collapse of the GOP probably wouldn't do it as big money would presumably move swiftly to form a coherent block so as to maintain what power they've accreted. The Kochs gave up on a third party strategy when they got nowhere electorally and so wormed their way into the GOP (with considerable success as we see now). The original neoconservatives (Irving Kristol's crowd) were worried that the Dem party was becoming too radicalized and insufficiently gungho in confronting communism but rather than organize a third party, they decided to put their efforts into supporting and redirecting the GOP.
