It's a good question.
One can understand the rationale for the Second Amendment if one considers the time and situations that existed when it was written.
One also understands that an organized militia (bearing muskets and flintlock pistols that could fire 3 rounds a minute if the bearer was highly expert) would be facing potential adversaries with the same crude weapons.
None of that applies today. No armies are threatening and no militia could stand, even briefly, against modern armies' arsenals (including nukes). Thus my post pointing to the absurdity of any claim that there is a need for the weaponry you can buy off the shelf including automatic assault weapons to protect yourself in a manner that made sense in 1790.
