An he was a few millions repeat millions of voters short of winning the majority of the total votes.
Calling a system where that can happen and sadly not rarely but of late more and more common event can not be called a democracy an that is not even taking into account where an unfriendly foreign power take part in our elections.
Of course the founding fathers did not trust the people enough to have a democracy and to the point that it was not until the 1900s that the people got even the right to vote directly for our senators.
