If I've said anything which smacks of " finely made distinctions used to justify weak arguments" I apologize. If you believe I've made "contradictory stands on [abortion or eugenics] in efforts to discredit other posters", feel free to point my bad faith efforts out to me.. For years I would simply refuse to discuss the topic of abortion on web forums, but I got tired of seeing all the distortions and half-truths being trotted out, most of them lifted directly from right-wing blogs which form much of the SSM these days.

As one of those issues that really cannot be settled by facts and instead is fed by emotions and feelings I don't think it lends itself to pro and con arguments in this sort of venue. I do feel pretty certain, however, that Sanger was not a "racist" and that the right's efforts to paint her as one are disingenuous and smack more of the common political practice of finding divisive "wedge issues" than really stating the truth. I do feel that people are simply ignoring the good relationships she had with black leaders and digging up old statements which, when taken out of context, appear problematic because of the archaic writing style.

What I really want to know is whether Sanger ever wore blackface.

Where is the WP? This is not worse than Christians voting for Trump? Apparently not. Hate for Jews is now socially acceptable or at least the omission of stories like this support that fact.

We're all - myself included - guilty of occasional excesses here, and you appear to me to be unusually straightforward, and free of excessive prejudgments and unwarranted criticisms of others. My criticism of your post was just that of ignoring a few key and meaningful phrases that Ms. Sanger actually wrote . As with many in that era, she favored some form of eugenics. In my view it matters little whether that is accomplished through contraception or abortion, though there are indeed meaningful moral distinctions between the two.

I did not have you in mind in my references to merely discrediting those you disagree with.

I've pointed this out for years. If you distinguish between different people because of their "race" then you're a "racist". If you hate other people because of their race then you're a "racist". I like to use the tern "racialist" to name the first type of racial discrimination, because there are times when it's useful or germane to a particular topic. White protestants (evangelicals) form one of the largest groups of Trump supporters so the poll does tell us something, and backs it up with research. But it doesn't try to suggest that white protestants are inferior or a threat to our way of life. I'd love to see racial categories assume less importance but we seem to have a fixation on this stuff — look at Elizabeth Warren.
