For sure. It's just that you'd already gotten to the point of disputing that Theodore Roosevelt's policies matched the description, so similar legislation from the same era that definitely did seemed relevant enough.

Mike Tomasky on why he thinks impeachment is the less preferable route in ridding the US of Trump. I think he's got this right.
Quote:
There’s one more reason I’d prefer to see Mr. Trump laid low via the ballot. It will do more long-term damage to the Republican Party.

If Mr. Trump is removed via impeachment and conviction — that is, with those 20 Republican votes — Republicans can say, “See, we’ve come to our senses; got that out of our system.” But if they renominate Mr. Trump and stick with him through November 2020 and the voters clearly say no, not again, Republicans are left sitting in the wreckage. They will be trying to air out the Trump stench for a generation, maybe two, which is precisely the fate they deserve.

@nimh,
It's a good nitpick. I wasn't certain I had that right but was too lazy to verify. No good excuse for that.

Yes, you do wonder how Trump, with his stratospheric IQ, could be so stupid as to think he could keep all this dirt swept under the rug.

You know, gungasnake, you can just walkaway from Trump.

Turkey has dismissed President Donald Trump's threat to "devastate" its economy if it attacks Kurdish forces in Syria following a planned pullout of US troops.

"You cannot get anywhere by threatening Turkey economically," Foreign Minister Nevlut Cavusoglu said.

Mr Cavusoglu has rejected Mr Trump's threats, saying: "We have said multiple times that we will not fear or be deterred by any threat."

He also criticised Mr Trump's methods, saying: "Strategic alliances should not be discussed over Twitter or social media."

However, US sanctions have had an impact on Turkey's economy before.

The Trump administration imposed sanctions and trade tariffs in August, amid a row over a detained US pastor - contributing to a sharp drop in the value of the Turkish lira. Pastor Andrew Brunson was released in October.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, said Turkey expected the US to "honour our strategic partnership".

"Terrorists can't be your partners and allies," he said.

This directly relates to the concerns I expressed earlier regarding how we can likely expect the news media to respond when Trump is gone.

a big part of why trump happened is the mainstream media being "bored" with normal politicians, especially democrats. people like obama and clinton "bored" them because they were focused on policy and important stuff. same reason they loved palin so much.

Went without much comment yesterday, but Kevin McCarthy claimed on “Face the Nation” that Gavin Newsom “in his inaugural address said there is a crisis along the border.”

He did not say that. He DID say the border wall “should never be built.” https://www.gov.ca.gov/2019/01/07/newsom-inaugural-address/

Almost the same thing.

Maybe, but the people who want a border wall is rising. It went from 34% to 42% in a year and it is growing. And remember the percentage of people that want a secure southern border is much higher.

So why didn't Trump secure funding when his party controlled the House?

So reopen the government and satisfy them. That's what the Dems have been saying all along. Better fencing in some areas, better surveillance technology in others, better facilities at legal border crossings..."proudly" shutting down the government and using federal employees as hostages is disgracefully authoritarian.

One reason is many establishment Republicans had no interest in helping him. Jeff Flake, Mc Cain, when alive, and Bob Corker are just a few.

It's a big part of why Obama happened as well.

But what is it about people that they want to vote for media stars? It's not as if Trump and "empty pantsuit" Palin got exclusively positive coverage. They were mocked and made to look foolish — and people still voted for them. And, to be fair, both Clinton and Obama were a lot glitzier than their opponents. In fact, I believe the decline of our political culture began when Bill revealed what kind of undershorts he preferred.

@coldjoint,
They were all senators. The House could have done something. And Trump could have pushed it through the Senate. Or at least have tried.

@hightor,
Not only that but for the most part, Flake and the others, almost always voted with most of the republicans in end no matter what they had to say about it. Trump could have done his border wall thing before midterms if he pushed hard like he is now. He is only acting like a baby because he lost the house and lost a good deal protection and loyalist in process. Kind of like his invasion of the migrants before the mid-terms. He knows his base and what they like and he gives it to them. If he didn't cause this shutdown, what we would we talking about mostly? Democrats in house that's what we would talking about and their new actions they take. Distraction folks. Meanwhile the senate goes on and soon Barr will be confirmed. Lord help us.

@coldjoint,
I love that cartoon of the mule. Its exactly as pundits say about the GOP.
"They blame the other side for what theyve been doing all along but count on the other sides not wanting to look petty"
So not looking petty isnt real high on the ELephants list.
Ive often listened to the severl Fox outlets (Philly has 3) , Beck, and ALL THE AM stations and look at the WSJ and NY Post, and its amazing how they each "got the daily memo with the talk points"

Because he brought it up. He could have mocked the ad (which I thought was embarrassing and beneath her) without resorting to the Pochahontas ****.
