@blatham,
Quote:
What I'm trying to grasp here is exactly what/who it is Coulter is trying to protect?

As Media Matters details, there was a broad initiative across right wing media to cajole/threaten Trump regarding the border wall. Apparently, that worked.

There's nothing new about this. Limbaugh, for one, has always operated as a gatekeeper for extremist conservative ideas, acting to thwart moderation and moderates in the party (Echo Chamber by Jamieson and Cappella is a formal study of precisely this phenomenon and the role of Limbaugh, Fox and the WSJ). Or one can consider the observation made by David Frum that while the GOP had thought that they were directing Fox, the truth was the other way around.

But the question above re Coulter's motivation (or that of Limbaugh, Murdoch, Hannity, Beck, Levine, etc) seems to remain a bit of a puzzle. Seems to, that is, if one somehow misses the fact that these people (and many more) have become multi-millionaires playing this right wing media con. There are other things going on here too (for example, each of these people are authoritarian personalities who seek domination through the standard bully behaviors and through purposeful deceits) but I think it is the economics that propels it all.
* Note: it is not a coincidence that these people and Trump are the same sort of personality type with similar motivations and techniques for personal advancement.

Mattis first ever secretary of defense to resign in protest

One just might be tempted to think this a rather important point.

@hightor,
About time, I mean are we supposed to stay there forever? I mean even if we made a success of the Afghanistan effort and had the Taliban subdued, the people over there are resilient to hardship and capable of regrouping when things cool down or the invading army leaves.

(sorry to keep adding on things..)

In my opinion, Obama should have pulled out once we got Bin Laden regardless of the state of Afghanistan and the Taliban. It is their country, they should sort it out.

I think this is a good thing too.

We'll see if it actually happens. Somehow I doubt it.

The problem is that they're not the only players. The Taliban were supported by both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia for differing reasons. Once the West leaves that support will come right back and undermine the democratically elected, ( yes democratically elected,) government.

No. We own up to our failure, achieve consensus among our allies, and negotiate some understanding with the Taliban and the Afghan government, probably with some sort of power-sharing agreement.

Just don't decide to leave everyone else holding the bag and announce it with a goddamned tweet.

Well it's good for the soldiers who are coming home.

I don't see how any good will ever come out of our involvement there. Watching the conflict continue after all the NATO forces leave and witnessing further suffering and civil strife really shouldn't fill our hearts with joy because we're no longer the ones bleeding.

President Trump wants to come, according to US Ambassador Richard Grenell to Germany and the hometown of his ancestors in the Rhineland-Palatinate visit. "I don’t know when, but he told me that he is coming to the hometown of his family" said Grenell in Berlin.

(Trump’s paternal grandparents came from Kallstadt an der Weinstraße, same with the Heinz family. The village with about 1200 inhabitants, is one of the best-known wine villages in the Palatinate.)

On Thursday, December 20, Secretary of Defense James Mattis submitted a letter of resignation to President Donald Trump. “Because you have the right to a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects,” he wrote, “I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.” The full text of the letter is reproduced below.

Quote:
Dear Mr. President:

I have been privileged to serve as our country’s 26th Secretary of Defense which has allowed me to serve alongside our men and women of the Department in defense of our citizens and our ideals.

I am proud of the progress that has been made over the past two years on some of the key goals articulated in our National Defense Strategy: putting the Department on a more sound budgetary footing, improving readiness and lethality in our forces, and reforming the Department’s business practices for greater performance. Our troops continue to provide the capabilities needed to prevail in conflict and sustain strong US global influence.

One core belief I have always held is that our strength as a nation is inextricably linked to the strength of our unique and comprehensive system of alliances and partnerships. While the US remains the indispensable nation in the free world, we cannot protect our interests or serve that role effectively without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to those allies. Like you, I have said from the beginning that the armed forces of the United States should not be the policeman of the world. Instead, we must use all tools of American power to provide for the common defense, including providing effective leadership to our alliances. NATO’s 29 democracies demonstrated that strength in their commitment to fighting alongside us following the 9-11 attack on America. The Defeat-ISIS coalition of 74 nations is further proof.

Similarly, I believe we must be resolute and unambiguous in our approach to those countries whose strategic interests are increasingly in tension with ours. It is clear that China and Russia, for example, want to shape a world consistent with their authoritarian model—gaining veto authority over other nations’ economic, diplomatic, and security decisions—to promote their own interests at the expense of their neighbors, America and our allies. That is why we must use all the tools of American power to provide for the common defense.

My views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues. We must do everything possible to advance an international order that is most conducive to our security, prosperity and values, and we are strengthened in this effort by the solidarity of our alliances.

Because you have the right to a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position. The end date for my tenure is February 28, 2019, a date that should allow sufficient time for a successor to be nominated and confirmed as well as to make sure the Department’s interests are properly articulated and protected at upcoming events to include Congressional posture hearings and the NATO Defense Ministerial meeting in February. Further, that a full transition to a new Secretary of Defense occurs well in advance of the transition of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in September in order to ensure stability within the Department.

I pledge my full effort to a smooth transition that ensures the needs and interests of the 2.15 million Service Members and 732,079 DoD civilians receive undistracted attention of the Department at all times so that they can fulfill their critical, round-the-clock mission to protect the American people.

I very much appreciate this opportunity to serve the nation and our men and women in uniform.

James N. Mattis

Your story is a little premature because the shutdown is in a little over 12 hours. If Trump does not sign the bill he has caved to no one.

Reuters reports: White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said that Trump would remain in Washington rather than go to Mar-a-lago for the holidays in the event of a partial government shutdown.

Flashback: Media Silence After Obama Fires General Mattis Without Even a Call

How do you like that? No support for Mattis when Obama was president. Why?
Quote:
President Barack Obama fired General James Mattis, the head of Central Command, without even calling the general to let him know he was being replaced.

“I am told that General Mattis was travelling and in a meeting when an aide passed him a note telling him that the Pentagon had announced his replacement as head of Central Command. It was news to him — he hadn’t received a phone call or a heads-up from anyone at the Pentagon or the White House,” Thomas E. Ricks reports.

In another post, Ricks says Mattis was fired because:

Pentagon insiders say that he rubbed civilian officials the wrong way — not because he went all “mad dog,” which is his public image, and the view at the White House, but rather because he pushed the civilians so hard on considering the second- and third-order consequences of military action against Iran. Some of those questions apparently were uncomfortable. Like, what do you do with Iran once the nuclear issue is resolved and it remains a foe? What do you do if Iran then develops conventional capabilities that could make it hazardous for U.S. Navy ships to operate in the Persian Gulf? He kept saying, “And then what?”

There is also a belief that Mattis and Obama differed on Iran.

Obama did not respect Mattis.

No doubt someone who has knowledge of Islam and understands just how devious it can, and is suppose to, be according to their own words and countless deadly actions. Allen West would be nice.
