The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates again, in spite of warnings from Donald Trump against the move.

Officials at the US central bank voted to lift the Fed's key interest rate by 0.25%, to a target range of 2.25%-2.5%.

But they also said future increases could come at a slower pace amid concerns about global growth.

It comes after the US president on Tuesday warned the Fed against making "yet another mistake" in raising rates, urging it instead to "feel the market".

He also urged the bank not to wind down a multi-billion dollar stimulus programme brought in after the financial crisis.

Mr Trump - who appointed the Fed's chairman, Jerome Powell - has repeatedly blamed the central bank for unsettled markets and dismissed analysts who cite other factors, such as rising trade tariffs.

But his remarks have put pressure on the Fed, as presidents generally avoid criticising the bank publicly, for fear of politicising the institution.

A Kurdish-led alliance in Syria says President Donald Trump's surprise decision to withdraw US troops will allow the Islamic State (IS) group to recover.

A statement from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) warned of a military vacuum that would leave the alliance trapped between hostile parties.

Mr Trump made the announcement on Wednesday, saying IS had been defeated.

However, major allies have disputed the claim.

A US partnership with the SDF - an alliance of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters - is credited with playing a major role in the virtual elimination of IS after it overran large swathes of Syria four years ago.

About 2,000 US troops have largely been stationed in the Kurdish region in northern Syria.

@izzythepush,
Even his rank supporters are starting to distance themselves from Trump over troop withdrawal, because noone with the knowhow can apparently convince him that this move is not well thought out.
Obama learned his lesson and had to reinsert troops after his withdrawal .
The talk on the scroll news is that Trump is counting on being a one term president an hes just busy enriching himself.

Coldjoint, Oralloy, and anyone else who is a defender of this present "president":

Why is it that, for over two years now, 45 and everyone attached to him has lied when asked about their connections to the Russian government? 45 and over a dozen people associated with him (including former cabinet members and family members) have told lies about Russia.
Why do think that is?

@farmerman,
Yeah, and in the meantime he's going to hightail it for an extended stay at the Golf Whitehouse.

Doing Putin's bidding is one way, unless Putin double crosses him which is likely.

Isn’t withdrawing from Syria what the Senate just passed last week?

Is this a bad thing?

@farmerman,
He has sacked some rather nasty characters, admittedly he did appoint them in the first place, but I suppose it's something.

We really need to stop being a part of what’s happening in Syria-financially and morally.

I don't accept your premise that these people have lied.

If they did lie, I have no idea why. I don't really pay a lot of attention to the Russia thing. I know the general details about it of course.

@izzythepush,
I hate to side with Russia or Trump and I hope I am not. However, whenever we (as in the US) leave, the same vacuum will exist, IS or some other name will still be there, Russia will still be there just waiting for us to leave. It is the same situation as it is in Iraq and Afghanistan only different names and states.

That you guys would complain about Trump doing something should be of no surprise to anyone. He's damned no matter what he does.

Why would you guys complain about military forces leaving Syria? We are not and should not be nation building. There should be a stated goal and when taht goal is attained, we should be done.

I will say, Putin publically declaring his support Trump and this Syria decision gives me pause. Especially in contrast of most of the EU saying this is a bad idea.

Trump’s decision to step away from the genocidal morass in Yemen is supported by most progressives I know. He did something else pretty great recently too:

Trump's push on prison reform called 'goodwill' to minorities

President scores win that eluded Barack Obama in reducing long mandatory minimum sentences

By S.A. Miller - The Washington Times - Wednesday, December 19, 2018
President Trump is on the verge of the biggest bipartisan victory of his presidency as Congress puts the finishing touches on a major overhaul of the criminal justice system, a political feat that also gives him a strong argument to take to minority communities in 2020.

The changes, which include cutting prison sentences for thousands of federal inmates, are expected to win final approval in the House this week and go to Mr. Trump, who is eager to sign it into law...

@maporsche,
That's pretty much a no-brainer. With Plump's treatment of the EU and NATO, the withdrawal of Americans from Syria pretty much gives Putin a free hand. Any Americans killed or injured could not be ignored by Plump, but if the French-lead coalition suffers casualties, so what? Plump won't care, and France can hardly challenge Russia unilaterally. This is just Putin jerking the puppet's strings, once again. It's a win-win for the Putin/Plump axis.

@Lash,
The prison reform bill is LONG OVERDUE and a solid first step to eradicate institutional racism. This is s Democratic Socialist plank...and a BIG one.
