Of course he can, he just does not care. The ends justify the means and that makes Democrats dangerous.

Matt Schlapp is the head of the American Conservative Union and had served as VP of federal affairs for the Koch brothers. Regular on Fox. His wife is Director of Strategic Communications for Trump.

Big surprise that he is forwarding an explicit appeal to bigotry.

My own guess it will end up being exactly as inclusive as the hearings, though I would prefer otherwise.

Note that while I've seen lots of commentary, I never watched any part of the hearing itself.

Trump orders FBI probe into Kavanaugh; Senate vote delayed
By Eric Bradner, Manu Raju, Phil Mattingly and Dana Bash, CNN

Updated 6:01 PM ET, Fri September 28, 2018

Quote:
"I've ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh's file," Trump said in a statement. "As the Senate has requested, this update must be limited in scope and completed in less than one week."

The delay was the result of a last-minute change of heart by Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, whose stunning move to force an investigation was quickly backed by several senators considered swing votes on Kavanaugh's confirmation.
Flake made the demand for the FBI probe after a chaotic scene at a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting in which the panel advanced Kavanaugh by a 11-10 party line vote -- saying his vote was conditioned on a probe taking place, and that he would oppose Kavanaugh on the floor of the Senate unless his demand was met.

Swing votes Alaska GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Maine GOP Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin subsequently backed an FBI investigation before they'll vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

The Judiciary Committee officially requested the FBI investigation, saying it should probe "current credible allegations" against Kavanaugh, and Republicans said it would be up to the FBI to decide what allegations are considered credible.

@ehBeth,
Well, I thought the claim was the FBI probe was impossible. Guess not.

At least something is happening.

@maporsche,
True chances are those four "swing Voters" would have caved into pressure. This pause during the investigation will at least allow senators time to process and reflect on the two testimonies.

DNC Chair Perez Wants FBI Investigation for Kavanaugh, Not Ellison

Two different worlds.
Quote:
“Why is he still the deputy chairman of the DNC?” Epstein asked Perez at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.

Perez said allegations like those leveled against Ellison should be taken seriously and investigated. He noted that the Democratic Party in Minnesota is investigating the matter and that Ellison himself has called for a House Ethics Committee investigation.

Where he stops short, however, is asking law enforcement to get involved. That is a key distinction because of Senate Democrats’ demands that the FBI investigate Ford’s allegations against Kavanaugh. Last week, the DNC tweeted that the Kavanaugh hearing should be delayed until the FBI can complete a full investigation:

For those unfamiliar with NTK Network, here's an article from Politico. The opening paragraph reads:

Quote:
“GOP researchers try the news business,” by Campaign Pro’s Maggie Severns: “When Democrat Ted Strickland joked about the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia during a recent AFL-CIO event, the Ohio Senate candidate met a familiar fate: A recording device spread his words from the meeting to the internet, where news outlets and social media spent a day blasting Strickland’s comment. But the way Strickland’s gaffe traveled was unusual. The audio was obtained by an under-the-radar website called NTK Network — which happens to be run by operatives connected to Republican opposition research firm America Rising, and is headquartered in the same building. ... America Rising co-founder Joe Pounder and three colleagues launched NTK (short for Need to Know) Network this summer as a side project, along with three colleagues who work for America Rising or Definers Public Affairs ... Pounder and others post collections of links and footage they think will raise eyebrows on a clean, image-heavy site, alongside other developing stories and news of the day about topics less germane to conservative political junkies — like the NFL or, this week, Kim Kardashian.” Full story.

It always helps to investigate new sources of so-called "news" when they appear.

How does that change the fact Perez has not asked for an investigation by law enforcement on Ellison. That is a fact. When it is true it does not matter who tells you?

Article One, Section Six of the constitution, first clause reads:

The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

The courts have interpreted this clause very narrowly, but in general, Congress and the Justice Department have been loath to prosecute sitting members of Congress. Mr. Ellison is a sitting member of Congress. Mr. Kavanaugh is not being prosecuted, and being investigated is something for which no member of government enjoys immunity.

As usual, the right-wing operatives attempt analogies in situations which are not analogous.

And who said anything about prosecution? How about some media coverage and an investigation.
