A US Border Patrol agent has been arrested in the state of Texas on suspicion of killing four prostitutes.

Officers began looking for Juan David Ortiz in the city of Laredo after a fifth woman allegedly escaped from him and got help from local police.

Mr Ortiz, who has worked for the force for a decade, initially fled but was later arrested in a hotel parking lot.

Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said police believed Mr Ortiz had acted alone.

"The county, the city can rest assured we have the serial killer in custody," Sheriff Cuellar said, in quotes reported by the Laredo Times newspaper.

@Real Music,
A survey conducted by the Cato Institute’s Emily Ekins for the Voter Study Group, analysed the views of Trump voters based on their frequency of church attendance — from “never” to “weekly” or more often.

The NYTimes published a summary: Conservatism After Christianity - A new survey reveals the Republican Party's religious divide.
Quote:
[...]
Churchgoing Trump voters were still more culturally conservative than Hillary Clinton voters — more likely to support the death penalty, more skeptical of immigration — and their views of Muslims, interestingly, seemed to have been influenced by Trump’s own rhetoric, becoming more hostile between 2016 and 2017.

But in general, churchgoing Republicans look more like the party many elite conservatives wanted to believe existed before Trump came along — more racially-tolerant, more accepting of multiculturalism and globalization, and also more consistently libertarian on economics. Secularized Trump voters look more like the party as Trump has tried to remake it, blending an inchoate economic populism with strong racial resentments.

@Walter Hinteler,
The biography of the Jew Solomon Perel (Ich war Hitlerjunge Salomon, "I was Hitler Youth Salomon"/"Europa Europa") became known worldwide. Today he watches the shift to the right in Germany with concern. He sees frightening parallels to the Weimar Republic - and yet has hope.

Quote:
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Parts of the population in Germany no longer trust the press at all - how is enlightenment supposed to work?

Perel: Yes, that's fascism, at least its beginning: The free press is seen as an enemy. That was the case back then. And that's what they want again today. In America it happens the same way. But I think the press is strong enough to deal with it.

Full interview (in German)
"Es fängt wieder an" (Its starting again)
in which he draws parallels between the Nazi era and the situation today (not only in Germany).

The Young Fascists.

Exactly how does quoting Trump verbatim equal "fascism"?
Quote:
Fascism is a form of radical authoritarian ultranationalism, characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition and control of industry and commerce, which came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe.

If you're going to engage in childish name-calling at least choose an appropriate term, you know, something which might actually be pertinent to your point.

Funny. When Bannon accepted the invite, he called the editor "the most fearless journalist of our time". When the editor had to rescind due to EVERYONE dropping out and returning their tickets, Bannon called him "gutless".

That's exactly what Trump himself would do. It's exactly what Americans hate. That two-faced-ness and childish "I'll get you back for this" comic book villain philosophy.

@blatham,
I wouldn't mind finding out about Avenatti as a political candidate at all. He's got a nice aggressive attitude, he drives righties nuts and he comes out on top. I'd have to find out where he stands on the issues and what office he's running for, of course, but candidate-wise, what's not to like?
