(Bloomberg) -- A bipartisan group of senators introduced legislation to impose new sanctions on Russia for interfering in U.S. elections, including penalties affecting Russian sovereign debt and energy projects, and requiring a report on President Vladimir Putin’s assets and net worth.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said in a statement Thursday the senators’ goal is to "impose crushing sanctions and other measures against Putin’s Russia until he ceases and desists meddling in the U.S. electoral process," stops cyberattacks and removes Russia from Ukraine.

The measure comes after reports of Russia’s ongoing efforts to sway U.S. elections, new efforts to hack U.S. senators, and intelligence agencies’ conclusion that Russia sought to meddle in the 2016 presidential election. Lawmakers from both parties also have been sharply critical of President Donald Trump’s meeting with Putin in Helsinki last month, saying Trump hasn’t done enough to hold Russia accountable.

The ruble extended its drop, falling as much as 0.9 percent against the dollar and bond yields jumped to the highest level since July last year after the sanctions proposal was announced.

Pretty obvious, huh? Trump would be stupid to fire Sessions to get another AG to fire Mueller. Sessions has been a Trump supporter from day one.
The problem is, reasoning such as this is normal reasoning and under Trump normal goes out the window and is replaced by anything he can technically get away with.

As Trump's 1½ years in office have illustrated, there are plenty of Republicans around willing to suck up to the alt-right and whatever else they're calling themselves these days, Trump has his pick of those for Attorney General. His immediate problem is to replace Sessions with another Attorney General who will see things his way and fire Mueller under a hail of bogus charges. Trump can't survive Mueller's report, even he must know that.

Turns out Trump can accomplish this any of several ways, as this Slate linked article from a year ago outlines. The recess appointment is one. Trump can appoint anyone to take the place of a fired/resigned Sessions and they don't even need to be confirmed until January 2019. Meanwhile, the newly appointed, (without confirmation necessary) Attorney General can wreck the Russia investigation.

This might well be what is occurring right now.

It has already been wrecked. It result in nothing but convictions of the people who manufactured it. It will take time, but if Trump stays in office it is going to happen.

a long while back the Trump-hating, cheese-eating Atlantic wrote:

There's No Way Mueller Will Indict Trump

Those hoping the special counsel will prosecute the president are engaging in fantasy. Mueller will not indict Trump for obstruction of justice or for any other crime. Period. Full stop. End of story. Speculations to the contrary are just fantasy.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/01/even-if-trump-is-found-guilty-mueller-wouldnt-be-the-indictment-decision-maker/551753/

Dream on, cheese-eaters.

Trump aint gunna say nuthin to Mueller except finish your report, then get the **** out, chump. If Mueller tries to subpoena him, Trump will tell him to stick his subpoena up his sorry ass. Rosenstein will be fired the day Mueller's report is filed, if not sooner, then investigated, and ultimately indicted.

If Mueller tries to enforce his subpoena, Trump will take it to the Supreme Court and, by the time it's heard, Kavanaugh will be in place.

It's a done deal, cheese-eaters. Nice try.

The White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump said at an Axios event today that she doesn't view the media as the "enemy of the people," breaking with President Trump's repeated public statements.

And she said that she agrees with White House colleagues who describe family separation as "a low point in the White House":
Quote:
That was a low point for me as well. I feel very strongly about that, and I am very vehemently against family separation and the separation of parents and children. ... I think immigration is incredibly complex as a topic, illegal immigration is incredibly complicated. I am a daughter of an immigrant, my mother grew up in Communist Czech Republic, but we are a country of laws. ... we have to be very careful about incentivizing behavior that puts children at risk of being trafficked, at risk of entering this country with coyotes or making an incredibly dangerous journey alone. These are not easy issues, these are incredibly difficult issues and like the rest of the country, I experience them in a very emotional way.

@Walter Hinteler,
Trump officials warn that Russia continues to target U.S. elections amid criticism the issue isn't being adequately addressed
Quote:
Top national security officials made a rare appearance in the White House briefing room Thursday to warn that Russia continues to target U.S. elections and to outline what is being done to combat the interference.

“In regards to Russian involvement in the midterm elections, we continue to see a pervasive messaging campaign by Russia to try to weaken and divide the United States,” Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats said. “We know there are others who have the capability and may be considering influence activities.”

The joint appearance by Coats, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, national security adviser John Bolton, FBI Director Christopher A. Wray and National Security Agency Director Paul Nakasone comes as the administration is facing criticism over its efforts to deal with election interference and continuing questions over how seriously Presdent Trump takes the threat.

@layman,
Although it would never happen, it wouldn't do Mueller any good to haul Trump before a grand jury. He can't indict him, so it would serve no purpose. And Trump would just take the 5th, anyway, even though he has nothing to hide.

Grand jury proceedings are completely secret, so no one would ever know anyway. All the public would know is that Trump went in, responded to the questions, and no indictment was ever issued.

@layman,
O Mudeller releases his report and all the corroborating data, Trump goes before a grand jury and pleads THE 5TH, AND HIS OWN COMMENTS VERY PUBLICLY MADE TO THE EFFECT THAT ONLY THE GUI;TY TAKE THE 5TH (OR WORDS TO THAT EFFECT), AND HE'S JUST PELEAD It, . Guilty out of his own mouth.

@MontereyJack,
Ya don't hear so good, that it, Jack? All grand jury records are sealed and secret. It is a crime to disclose them. Mueller couldn't mention it in any report.

Ya done been fucked again, eh?

Mueller has the grand jury, what is the problem besides no evidence, it is clear that does not bother him. He has enough problems with a fat old millionaire, he keeps in solitary, that refuses to give him anything on Trump.(most likely because he has nothing)

@layman,
Sometime in January, 2025, on his way out of office, Trump will pardon himself and all his homeys for any crimes, then known or unknown, they committed during his administration. There's ample precedent for this:

Quote:
A presidential pardon of Richard Nixon (Proclamation 4311) was issued on September 8, 1974, by President Gerald Ford, which granted his predecessor Richard Nixon a full and unconditional pardon for any crimes he might have committed against the United States while president.

It's the law. Fucked, yet again, eh, cheese-eaters?
