A city official in California who wrote a newspaper column promoting “straight pride” -- and referring to gay men as “fairies” who wear “tinker bell wings” -- defended himself at a city hall meeting this week as hundreds of protesters called for his resignation.

Vice Mayor Ted Hickman, 74, of Dixon refused to step down or apologize for the column published last month in the city’s Independent Voice newspaper, FOX KTVU reported.

“I didn’t give up my First Amendment right when I became an elected official,” Hickman said at the meeting. “To the contrary, I swore like the rest of the council to uphold the Constitution, which includes the First Amendment.

Hickman’s comments were widely criticized as homophobic, and outraged protesters packed into city hall on Tuesday, calling for the vice mayor’s removal.

Supreme Court Won't Hear Georgia Lesbian's Discrimination Case

The Supreme Court announced today that it will not hear a lesbian’s employment discrimination case, which would have provided a test of whether federal law against sex discrimination applies to sexual orientation as well.

The court turned down the case of Jameka Evans, who says she suffered harassment and discrimination at her job as a security guard at Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah and was eventually forced out because she’s a lesbian and gender-nonconforming.

In March a three-judge panel of the U.S, Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, in a 2-1 ruling, upheld a lower court’s dismissal of Evans’s suit against the hospital. The judges did not dispute the facts of the case, but the majority said they were bound by precedent that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, does not cover.

Evans, asked the full court to rehear the case, but this summer it declined to do so, leaving Lambda no option but to go to the Supreme Court. Now it has declined as well.

In Helsinki today, Trump and Putin spoke to reporters before entering their private meeting. Trump predicted that “I think we will end up having an extraordinary relationship,” adding that “getting along with Russia is a good thing, not a bad thing.” But as The Post’s write-up puts it: “Trump did not mention Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential campaign as one of the topics to be discussed.”

In blaming only previous U.S. leadership and the current Mueller probe for bad relations with Russia — and not Russia’s attack on our democracy, which is particularly galling, now that this attack has been described in great new detail — Trump is not merely spinning in a way that benefits himself. He’s also giving a gift to Putin, by signaling that he will continue to do all he can to delegitimize efforts to establish the full truth about Russian interference, which in turn telegraphs that Russia can continue such efforts in the future (which U.S. intelligence officials have warned will happen in the 2018 elections). In a sense, by doing this, Trump is colluding with such efforts right now.
